So sorry you experienced these side effects from Prolia. I regret ever starting this drug and fearful of what to do. Do I stop and start another drug? These fear is a constant.

I have just started Prolio with a new M.D. I was without any medication for at least 5 years. At that time, I was Osteopenia for the hips and neck which had remained the same for five years without any medication.
The T and Z scores for my spine dropped from Ostopenia to Osteoperosis. So, I was upset.
When, I was on Fosamax, I simply did not have a decrease in the score. But, the M.D. Family Medicine doctor simply stopped the use of Fosamax. Then, I saw the decline and switched doctors.
The Bone Density exam is like a radiology exam. I follow the scores as well.
Probably any maintenance of bone density for me has been rigorous weight lifting, group exercise classes, swimming, and, outdoor bicycling. I am at the gym almost daily. If I am too tired for the gym, I do the 3 miles walk as a weight bearing exercise.
So far no injuries. I take preventive classes on how to avoid trips, slips, and, falls. Those are on You Tube as well. This is what I do for improving bone health, physical strength, coordination, and, aerobic capacity.

Thank you. Now, I am being followed by an Endocrinologist for the osteoporosis/penia. I have been on Reclast Fusion for three years now. I continue with my workouts, which include weightlifting, group aerobic and strengthening exercises, swimming laps, and outdoor bicycling. I have had some improvement on the Tscores for the femur and neck bones. The spine remains the same TScore and has not worsened, for which I am grateful. I am 76 years old. My balance and coordination have improved markedly. I do not experience trips, slips, or falls.
I am glad to help any other woman get started on an exercise program for bone health. I think that this is preparing me for my next decade of life.

I am wondering the same thing. My endocrinologist has recommended it after Forteo. Does everyone have major side effects?

Thanks dma053 for starting the discussion.

I had 3 injections. Months later I had a deep teeth cleaning and 3weeks later discovered my two front bottom teeth felt loose. I set up appointment with the dentist and was told I had to see the periodontist. End result was surgery to strengthen those teeth. He told me I had lost 50% of my jaw bone, caused by Prolia. I cancelled my upcoming injection. Fast forward to July 3. I had been experiencing lower abdominal pain. . I am a 2-year breast cancer survivor, I was fearing the worst, return of cancer conceivably uterine. CT scan diagnosed diverticulitis. I was stunned and curious as to what caused it, I have always followed a healthy diet. I typed in "does Prolia cause diverticulitis" and the answer was "yes". I will never have another Prolia injection.

Yes, also curious about what you used after Prolia. I had only one shot and lost two molars. I'm back on Forteo and they say I will have to do Prolia after as my Endo does not believe I had Osteocrinosis of the jaw, which is what my bone scan concluded. Not sure I'm willing to take that risk though...I have 9 months to decide.

My rheumatologist wants me to start Prolia. I am terrified. I am just abut 92 years old. Had a compression fx a year ago on L21; already had one at L2. Only found out I had others at T5 and T12 back in 2028 when I got a chest x-ray. Doctor said because I have had these fractures I will get more. Don't know what to do. I have hips, sacrum and spine issues; arthritis all over plus IBS-C, chronic sinusitis, chronic bilateral epicondylitis in both elbows, peripheral neuropathy in lower limbs to feet, hypothroidism and worsening (even with injections) dry macular degeneration. I don't want any more issue.

very good question,
I'd rather not see you on Prolia. You could have a good experience on the medications, but even if you were lucky, there is suppression of the immune system. Pneumonia is an opportunist as we age. And you'd have increased risk of longer term infections with the viruses, bacteria and fungus.
The nice thing about Prolia is that it is one injection every six months.
But you can't be late or stop the injection without taking another medication that risk some of the same common side effects mainly of increased joint pain.
Goodquestion, it would be good to see an endocrinologist. You might consider Evenity, if you haven't any cardiac issues. It puts on new bone quickly (the most quickly of all of the drugs), which can be important if you are on the verge of fracture. But again there is the joint pain that most experience. And eventually you'd have to take another medicatiion to maintain the gained bone.
The medications I like best are Forteo and Tymlos. They are nice partly because the leave your system quickly. So if you had a negative side effect, you'd just stop taking them. They are a daily injection with the tiniest of needles. and some patients can't bear the thought.
An endocrinologist will order a dexa which will give you an idea of the magnitude of your bone loss and tell you your risk of fracture. But an endocrinologist will have a good understanding of the medications and their hazards. You do already have enough issues, but it would be better not to add another fracture to the list.
I have a dislike of Prolia and have never taken it, but many have good experiences and they should contradict everything I mention. I'm on Forteo and think it the best. Bless your choice with luck.
