What happened to the lady who was having significant bleeding problems 8 days after colpocleisis surgery?

Good evening @lisalucier, @hopeful33250, @sharnie. Please disregard my post from a day ago.
My concern today is how does this medication work "nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals 100mg capsule, 2 times a day"? Today is my 2nd day and I burn and itch and my urine is warm. Is this normal?

Hello @csues,

I am sorry to hear about the side effects of the medication you are taking. Have you contacted your doctor about these side effects? If not, please do so. There are many medications used to treat a UTI and some have less side effects.

I have been advised to have a Colpocleisis surgery and have an appointment in a few months. I am concerned that my skilled doc is not being fully open about the negatives. I am very drug sensitive and allergic to some antibiotics. In reading experiences here I see that some patients have developed infections that seem difficult to treat. I avoid invasive treatments due to my deep fear of antibiotics. So I have a trade off... future problems with the prolapse or possible deadly anaphylaxis. The doc is highly skilled but has also seemed paternal. Advice?

Good evening @lisalucier, @hopeful33250, @sharnie. Well I picked up my prescription for nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals 100mg capsule. Was wondering what to expect. I have always drank 64 or more ozs of water daily (old WW’s habit)
Took my 1st doseage at 10 am with food and 8 ozs cranberry juice went to the bathroom within 30 mintues. Drank 14 ozs cranberry juice at 11am went to the bathroom within 30 mintues. Drank about 10ozs of coffee 1pm and went to the bathroom within an hour and have been able to go about 30mins to one hour since. As of 5pm I have drank about 62 ozs of fluids and now I can barely go to the bathroom. Am I doing something wrong? Does this medicine cause you to go to the bathroom more or less often?
I know you cannot give medical advise and that is not what I asking just wondering what to expect.
Remember this is my 1st time having a UTI -@csues

Hi, @csues - your doctor sounds very careful and precise. Do let us know what she says about the type of UTI she finds you have.

Your husband seems like a great help with his research for you.

Are you saying that you feel better with your UTI when you drink 64 ounces of fluids? Are you up most of the night because you are drinking more fluids during the night, or going to the bathroom as a result of your fluid intake?

Good morning @lisalucier. It seems like if I stay on top of my fluids the burning and pain isn't as bad as when I drink a smaller amount of fluids. Since my surgery in April 2024 I go more at night, every 3hrs. Because I was drinking my fluids late yesterday I was up about every 2 hrs.
I mentioned to my husband a few minutes ago if I don't hear from my obgyn today I will contact her on Oct 30. I figure this has given her a week to get the information she needs for a treatment plan. Not sure what or how long you can go with a uti before getting treatment.
PS before surgery I could go the whole night w/o bathroom needs. I need to remember I'm 76 and as we age we go more at night I was told 🙂

Hi @lisalucier and @sharnie . Thank you for the link and I have read it. I'm 6 mos out from having the surgery. Having a differcult time going to the bathroom today. Waiting to see what my obgyn has to say about what type of uti it is and how she is going to treat it. I notice that if I drink my 64 oz s of fluids am okay with a light buring. I'm keeping a log each day. I'll be up most of the night becasue I'm trying to get my fluids in.
My husband has been great about helping me research what >100,000 cfu/ml Enterococcus species means, etc. I cannot remember his exact words but he said there are different species of baterica that lives in this name and that the DR has to request find out which one I have before any treatment can been done. So as of this moment I'm waiting to hear from her. Praying htat the Lord can help heal this and I can get back to living.
Thank you for the information. As I find out more I will post again. I do check everyday the Mayo websie to see what others are saying and experiencing. Sorry for any typos. Have a blessed night - csues

Hi, @sharnie - I had a different surgery in that region in 2012, a prolapse repair. I got a UTI during my recovery period, which I understand is common post-prolapse surgery.

I saw some information in the results section of an article in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology that you may be interested in:

Perioperative adverse events associated with colpocleisis for uterovaginal and posthysterectomy vaginal vault prolapse
https://www.ajog.org/article/S0002-9378(15)02226-7/fulltext#:~:text=the%203%20groups.-,Results,occurring%20in%2034.7%25%20of%20subjects.
Results
In all, 245 subjects underwent colpocleisis during the study period. Mean age and body mass index were 78 (±7) years and 27.7 (±5.8) kg/m2, respectively; 59.1% (140/245) of subjects had stage-4 prolapse. The most common adverse event was urinary tract infection occurring in 34.7% of subjects.

I do recall that medication cleared up the UTI rather quickly, though I turned out to have a reaction (rash) from the first medication I was given. I think that is pretty rare.

How are you doing today, @sharnie?

Good morning Sharnie. Just got my urine test back and it says I have >100,000 cfu/ml enterococcus. Waitng for my obgyn to get back to me on how she wants to treat it. Not happy about this because I have never had a uti in my life. Not sure why I'm having this issue now. Has anyone else gotten a uti after having this type of surgery?
