Probiotics & Antibiotics

Posted by decosmo @decosmo, Mar 4, 2017

Hello All, I hope you had a good Saturday. I had to start a round of Doxcy today for 10 days for the most recent lung flareup. Some of you may know by my previous posts, that I also struggle with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth). Needless to say, I am a bit worried that this round of antibiotics will contribute to my SIBO and heaven forbid the dreaded C DIF. I have started to take 15 Billion probiotic daily (ultimate Flora) and wondering what strength those of you take when you are on a course of antibiotics.
Kate, I believe you shared info on Florstar. Does this probiotic contain dairy? I am lactose intolerant and I could not tell by the advertisement.
I look forward to learning about the strength and amounts you take.

Hi Rosie,
Probiotics and antibiotics @tessie @milindohope83 @katemn @dtrell @pamelasc1 and others have discussed in a number of places in the MAC group, for example here http://mayocl.in/2mtZygl and here http://mayocl.in/2mx4fqf. The second link discusses lactose-free probiotics.

I am taking the "big three" and am wondering what probiotics people are using. Right now I am taking FloraJen3 which was recommended by my pharmacist, but I'm not sure if there are other better choices that you may have had success with. Has anyone else had thrush or other candida infections?

Hi @janeted,
I moved your question about probiotics to this existing thread. Please scroll through the past messages for more information. I'm also tagging fellow members @unicorn @nannette @beatitnow @ling123 @jentaylor @lindam272 who can share their experiences with probiotics and perhaps shed some light on your question about thrush and candida infection.

I take Digestive Advantage in the morning with breakfast. It's supposed to bind together better so that more probiotics actually get in your gut. I know there are several posts about probiotics throughout the forum. You might want to scan through Katherine's pages.

Don't know anything about candida. I do know that my resp therapist told me to brush my teeth, or at the very least, rinse my mouth out, after saline nebulizer treatments to prevent thrush. That's all I've got on that. Hopefully someone else can shed more light for you. Linda

@decosmo, Hi Rosie! I realize that this is an older post, but I wanted to interject this info here for future readers. Here are a few brands of probiotics that other members have posted: 'Renew Life' w/30billoion live cultures, 'Floraster' - good to take if your antibiotic is giving you diarrea (Costco $57.00), 'IMD Complete Probiotics' from Amazon (a tad pricey). I also drink lactose free Kefir milk, it has live cultures in it. REMEMBER: take your probiotics at least two hours prior or after your antibiotics.
