PPI induced Anemia

Posted by bosco17 @bosco17, Nov 4, 2022

Ive been on 40mg of Pantoprzole for 4 weeks and my RBC count, Hemoglobin,Iron, Hematocrit have gone abnormal. Anyone else having these types problems?

I've been on it for 4 yrs. The only time mine was abnormal was when I had a bleeding ulcer.

I think its possible but PA said it's rare. Have you had an endoscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy to rule out bleeding elsewhere? I had those done. Sometimes one may have iron malabsorption issues.

Everything was normal(in my CBC blood test) before starting 40mg of Pantoprozole. No abnormalties in RBC, Hemoglobin,& Hemoacrit on 10/10/22. 24 days after starting PPI(11/3/22) my CBC Blood test came back showing Anemia. Nothing changed in those 24 days except the start of PPI use!! I believe it has to do with absorbtion of iron due to the acid suppression from PPIs but Im going to follow up with a hematologist to make sure.

I’m a double red blood donor and my iron is always good before donating.
