How long should I use vitamen E on scars post TKR?

Posted by nana082526 @nana082526, 6 days ago

I’m 12 weeks post TKR. I’ve been using vitamin E oil on the scar 2 X daily for 6 weeks.
How much longer should I keep doing this?

Scar tissue can continue to form for several months depending on the person. If you are happy with appearance you could stop and see if it begins to change.

I tend to form ugly scar tissue, so I use silicon scar patches on the site 16-18 hours per day for about 3 months or until the scar is almost invisible. The current one on my wrist Icover with a soft knit sleeve (the one Iwore under the splint.) No idea why they work, but they do. My gall bladder scars, 4 tiny incisions, are where nobody sees them so I didn't do the patches - 3 of them formed ugly keloids.
The current brand from my dermatologist are Silagel - I have used others but like these best. Expensive, but you can wash and reuse for 4-5 weeks.
Also keeping scars out of the sun for the first year minimizes discoloration.

I’m 12 weeks post TKR & have been rubbing vitamin E oil onto my scar for 6 weeks. How long is it recommended to keep applying it & rubbing it onto scar tissue?
The scar is actually looking pretty good already.

@nana082526, Your scar looks really good at 12 weeks. Looks like you are doing great!

Personally, I am at a little over 5 months and I still rub my scar down with Aveeno lotion twice daily. I am going to do this until the scar pinkness is gone and it is thin white.

You can ask your surgeon what he/she recommends. Blessings & Prayers...

@nana082526 it looks very good, as soon as you have the feeling it’s getting dry ) dry skin) just rub in again, little movements from one side to the other, not longways.

I hadn’t heard about rubbing sideways, not the length of the scat.
Thx for that info.

@nana082526 Rubbing across the scar can break down any scar tissue that tends to form in the direction of the incision. If you see a raised or depressed area it is especially important to do tgis.

@I understand that VE is no longer recommended for surgical scars. I have been using silicon scar cream. Making sure I use sunscreen as well.
