Post Pituitary Resection

Posted by jojobunny @jojobunny, Apr 25, 2025

Does anyone have advice for post pituitary surgical headache? I am 1 week post endoscopic transphenoid surgery. I have been having a constant headache. I am on fluid restrictions and slowly getting up to move. My headache seems to get worse if I am upright for too long. Has anyone else had this? Any tips or tricks to manage pain without meds? I am currently practicing a four four breathing meditation, I can’t smell so no aroma thearapy will work, and stretching is not an option. Any help from someone that has lived this would be great.

@jojobunny welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. There aren’t many discussions regarding pituitary issues in here. I have not “lived this” myself. The most obvious thing I can think of is to double check your post surgery discharge instructions and look for tips, warnings or “when to contact your provider” information. Have you had any follow up exams yet? My suggestion would be to contact the provider to find out if these headaches are normal post surgery and what to do about them.

My husband had to lay flat in the hospital for a week. He was warned of the headache. Just make sure an endocrinologist is followed up with as your hormones i.e. thyroid , growth, cortisol, vasopressin, etc might have to be replaced. It will get better.

Hello!

I started having a severe headache around week two. Then it felt like an infection with low grade temps. This started around the time I started an NSAID once a day at 10 days post. I’m wondering if there is a connection because I am now four months post and still get head pain and eye pain if I try to take one. Not sure if you’re taking anything that could cause a complication? I’m trying to stick with Tylenol and a half of a half of Sudafed at this time. You could have a lot of congestion and that contributes as well. Once I started the Sudafed I was able to start comfortably put my head on the pillow. Hang in there.
