Post hip replacement - gluteus medius tear
Has any senior had a gluteus medius detached from the bone following hip replacement? If you had surgery did you see significant improvements.mi can only find cases with young athletes.
If you did not, have you had problems as a result?
I am 78 year old female with chronic back issues, 2 artificial knees and a recent right hip replacement. After 4 months of physiotherapy and exercise I still limp, cannot stand on that leg alone and need a cane to stabilize but I have little hip pain.
An Mri shows a 3cm Medius tear, detached from bone. I am told that I would only see marginal improvements, still need a cane and limp. So I don’t know why I would do this surgery that has an onerous recovery of 6 +months.
Are there risks down the road of not doing it? Physio says I can strengthen other muscles to compensate, may limp but will need a cane. if that’s all, I can live with it.
I don’t know how to make this decision. Toronto, Canada

There is much about gl tears on this site. Go to the search box and type in gluteus medius or gluteus tears and run thru what others have posted. I am on the fence re a gl transfer, have met w/ surgeon, etc., and will reach back w/ you later. On the fly just now. Joanne

I haven't had a hip replacement, but I have had my gluteus medius tendon tear completely off my hipbone. I was in horrible pain and could barely walk. The hip surgeon drilled 3 holes in my hipbone and sutured the tendon into these holes. This was done 15 years ago when I was 65 years old. The surgery was a success, and I am still doing O.K. I don't limp due to my hip, but I do limp slightly because I need another knee replacement.
You are in a completely different situation because of your hip replacement so I really don't know how that changes the outlook. Is there any chance that you could get a couple more opinions from other hip orthopedists?
Hi I am really anxious to hear more of what you have learned.
