PMT and warfarin

Posted by jimv @jimv, 2 days ago

My husband was recently diagnosed with pmr by his pcp. He will be seeing a rheumatologist in the next couple weeks. I read about supplements that may help with the inflammation but they interact with warfarin, which he takes.
Does anyone have PMR and take warfarin?

I used to take warfarin during my days with PMR while on prednisone. There was a significant drug interaction between prednisone and warfarin. Every time my prednisone dose changed my INR changed which then required an adjustment of my warfarin dose. Close, frequent monitoring of INR is essential when starting, stopping, or changing the dose of prednisone.

I'm on eliquis instead of warfarin but I've had no issues. I do not know of any supplements that are proven to be helpful for PMR so be careful with what you do before meeting with the rheumatologist. They will know what is safe and what is bunk. They will also do blood work that can help determine what is needed. Influencers and wannabes are some of the most dangerous people out there now.

Yes I am on warfarin and yes the prednisone did increase its effect on my blood levels. it is very important to have your warfarin levels monitored carefully while on prednisone. I am fortunate because I was able to purchase my own monitor from a Canadian Company in Montreal called CoaguChek. I cannot tell you how much simpler this has made my life. If the numbers or too high or low I simply contact my nurse and she suggests the correct change in dosage. It takes away much of the concern and uncertainty around travelling out of country or altitudes or changes in diet .

@jimv
The doctor who prescribes his Watfarin should advise him what not to take. His PCP should also be able to do the same but may opt to defer to the Hematologist or Rheumatologist.
Best of wishes to you both.
