Just learned that I have spondylolisthesis L3-4 and L4-5

Anyone else? What have you learned about this condition? Thanks

Don’t use orthopods for spine surgery when neurosurgeons are much more highly qualified and knowledgeable.

Good advice - thank you!

March 2024 wife had L3 TO L4 Removal of 3 interspinious spacers hardware, decompression L2 TO S1 and intertransverse fusion L4 to L5 and in April 20024 had Revision decompression L2 TO S1. Now she has
sondylolisthesis(NEVER HAD BEFORE) Surgeon who did operation now says I can fix that now you need oblique operation No thanks!!! Now she hasSPONDYLOLISTHEIS and no surgeon will give a second opinion on failed operation. Started with moderate back and leg pain pre operation now has unbearable pain 24/7. Sometimes better to live with moderate pain rather than risk an operation at hand of a surgeon. You can always find surgeon who wants to operate but finding one who declines is difficult

Actually the operation was in March 2023. My error. Waited a year to see top spine surgeon
here in NY, originally was to see him in 7-2023 but once he heard about prior surgery he office said come back in a year. Saw him for consultation 8-2024 about her a complete waste of our time he said virtually nothing about prior surgery and we left his office without any options by him.
Saw another supposed spine surgeon expert and this time he said go back to surgeon who did operation "I know him and he is a great guy" and he also said my office made a big mistake by
calling you in because if I had knw about failed 3-2023 operation I would have never called you in for a second opinion. Unfortunately spine surgery is a "big club" here in NY.

I am one of the lucky ones as I have an orthopedic spine specialist who told me that the last resort will be to operate. He gave me an epidural shot for nerve compression due to disc degeneration impacting my L4/5 and ultimately pressing on the nerve. He is very generous with PT prescriptions and is willing to give me additional epidurals, if needed. Thank goodness because after reading peoples experience with spine fusion - I agree - I would rather live with moderate chronic pain.

I will always need to stretch, work out per PT instructions, and the PT will massage my back to release tension when needed. Pilates has helped but honestly, the type of stretching and strengthening exercises the PT gave me helps a lot more than Pilates. I will take aspirin and just push through with some good days and some bad days.

My mistake operation was in 3-2023 not 2024. Surgeon who did vfirst failed operation once to do this time an oblique operation to fix new problem spondylolistheis that she never had before. Made a big mistake in doing first operation. Now a virtual cripple. Very bitter about this

Very sorry to hear this.
Drs are great ethical creatures until they are not.
Understand Drs have their own code of ethics internally.
As the patient your needs are second to their own well-being.
Sorry for your situation and thank you for the reminder. 7/11 hemilamenotomy .
Done my homework and can’t go on as I am.
Wish me luck.

Very sorry about your misfortune.
Don’t give up hope
All I can offer are my prayers that a miracle of some unexpected nature will change the trajectory you are on; mentally and physically.

agreed! The neurosurgeons have the education and the training to deal with the many nerves and inner makings of our spine.

i\I should add the following: The net result of" "operation" was that my wife now has SPONDYLOLISTHEIS never had before (xrays proof we have) and now the original doctor says "I can fix that with a new oblique operation." No thanks! Why another operation to fix a problem she never had before?

So I’m not the only one having trouble with surgeons. I had a failed back surgery L4-S1 April of 2023 surgeon won’t do anything I’ve seen 3 others they won’t either and now Mayo Clinic turned me down. I’m starting to feel like the surgeon screwed something up and the others see it. Severe leg burning , numbness, pain, stabbing, starting to go to the other leg. Bowel and bladder issues , testicular pain when I rub the tailbone. I can’t walk very far with a cane , I’m starting to use a Walker more . I’ve seen all Neurosurgeons my MRI shows a pinched nerve at L3 also mentions pseudo arthritis, I have spinal stenosis also. Pain doctor agreed I shouldn’t get a pain stimulator because there is something wrong. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@anoyymous123 - Sorry for your issues! It appears you're in a bit of a box. You've a concern the docs aren't telling you the truth plus you're skeptical about what you're being told...Yet, you still have significant (likely) spinal issues that will only be improved with doctor assistance. That's a conundrum for sure.

I have a suggestion. Have you seen a physiatrist? This specialty is focused on pain origin and management. They are not surgeons so there is no tendency to see all problems being solved by surgery. Yet the physiatrist can read films, understand your pain experiences, and help diagnose cause-and-effect.

Have you tried that approach?
