PET Scan: Does this mean I have lung cancer?

Posted by nancysyost @nancysyost, Mar 22 1:33am

My Dr has been watching lung nodules in my lower left lung. For 4 yr it measured 6. I skipped a yr then last week I had another scan n it measured 9 so now I’m being sent Monday for a PET Scan. Does this sound like I have lung cancer and what can I expect to happen. I’m so scared

@rcerwin3, I'm sorry that you are facing another biopsy so soon after surgery. I'm sure it's stressful, even though you know that the PET scan can show inflammation. It's not always bad news. Has the endoscopy been scheduled?

@lls8000 you know this is so weird! My ENT was so into "get me in for an endoscopy" and when scheduling called they scheduled me for FEBRUARY! I sent my doctor a message through MyChart if he thought this was ok.....hope he got it. Still haven't heard from him and that was last week. Just not an easy way around here to communicate with doctors....only through MyChart

Had a pet scan done. Showed several nodes in lung that they said were not able to determine. Also showed asymetrical light up at right tonsil area. Really worried.

Hi @ambers2140, I'm sure your doctors have told you that lung nodules are common, and most are not cancer. Of course, any finding that it not 'normal' can be scary. PET scans pick up on metabolic activity, and that can mean inflammation or infection as well as cancer. Did your team suggest scanning again in x number of months?, or are they planning to biopsy?

Good Morning,
I have MAC disease and in Sept when I went for my 6th month check up, the Dr. saw a new spot on my lung. He did not think it was cancer and put me on an antibiotic. He said see you in 3 months, I went home and thought about it and decided to go back in 1 month. I did and now another new spot appeared. Went for PET scan end of October. Was scheduled for a robotic biopsy last Tuesday since the PET scan lit up and report said suspicious for malignancy. Got to hospital and they gave me the CT scan. 20 minutes later the Dr. came in and said those spots on your lungs have gotten smaller, it's not cancer and you don't need to have the biopsy. Go home and enjoy the Holidays. So, no it does not mean cancer . It could just be an infection or inflammation. Try to be positive and if you're a faithful person pray and ask friends to pray for you. I will keep you in my prayers.

When my PET/CT was done, something "lit up"in my upper esophagus in addition to my timor. My surgeon and my oncologist asked me to see an ENT (who of course couldn't get down that far in the office) so NOW they are scheduling me for a sedated endoscopy. Here goes my panic again. I'm sorry - I hope you find out some answers soon. As I know first hand and I am sure you have heard on here....not knowing is the worst part.
