Persistent infection in ortho surgical site

Posted by bsb816 @bsb816, Mar 17, 2023

My dad had knee replacement several years ago. March 2022 he fell and broke the patella. The replacement joint was fine but the break was non-union and required surgery. The bones, ligaments, etc have healed and he was released by the ortho surgeon, but the surgical wound has had persistent infection which is being treated at the local wound care center. The ortho surgeon has done one surgery to treat the infection, he has been on multiple courses of oral antibiotics, both broad spectrum and specific to culture results, and is currently on a 14 day course of in-home IV antibiotics. He went back to the wound care center today and the infection has continued to grow; the wound care doctor is sending him back to the orthopedic surgeon with the recommendation of another surgery to treat the infection.

I am wanting him to request a referral to another wound care center or an infectious disease specialist, as this current doctor/clinic have apparently done all they can do and have continued with the same treatment plan for the last 7 months despite the persistent, worsening infection.

Has anyone had a similar experience and any recommendations?
