How do you manage the situation when periferal neuropathy affects your balance and walking ability?

Does anyone feel very fatigued and weak from SFPN? When I exert inside or outside in my flower garden I’m thoroughly exhausted after 15 min! No chest pain, but need to sit down and recover for about 15-20 min.

You, all of you are heroic in my eyes. The conditions we experience in our individual selves and bodies in silence often separated family and community produces a peculiar anxiety and self absorption which would not ordinarily be our suit. While our modern life is yet to be declared fully helpful or particularly nurturing, yet we assail ourselves and our aloneness with effort and determination. This effort to find a remedy and resolution is something inspired and born of nature so never feel defeated for your striving to be well.
May Peace always seek and find you at ease and rested.

Hi- I too have terrible balance & leg weakness due to CIDP and Sjogrens. I will have my 2nd Rituxan infusion this week as other treatments haven’t slowed it down.
It’s hard not to get discouraged as your world shrinks but I make myself go to PT and social gatherings -thank God for my husband who helps me otherwise I would be in assisted living.
The Rituxan has caused major fatigue but that’s common for a while I’m told. Hang in there and do what you can- pray that things will improve for you. Ellen

It is the most frustrating thing I have to face. What do Ido? I cry a lot, I stagger around like a drunk, I use the skills my physical therapist taught me and I do all the exercises they taught me, and I try not to fall because it is such a burden on my husband and finally I pray a lot.

@jchet PN is exhausting and I feel the same. According to Mayo, I have both small and large fiber PN. Balance getting worse over time and that alone can be tiring.

@rgpeet - I try to do balance exercises fairly often during the day and it seems to help some for me. At least it makes me more aware of being careful and trying not to do anything to make me fall. Mayo has some information on different exercises if you haven't tried them - https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/balance-exercises/art-20546836.

Thank you. That site has now been saved as a favorite by me. I discovered during my physical therapy following my right total knee replacement that I have terrible balance. I often fail the first test, for example.

I have also been diagnosed with RLS (originally diagnosed by another neurologist as peripheral neuropathy). But the RLS manifests itself solely at night...to me.

So I have decided I have to live with it. I play golf three times a week and I am an 81 YO male with a artificial left hip and right knee. My new favorite term on the golf course is "it is only a ball" and I don't walk out onto uneven surfaces like rocks.
