Pelvic Floor Spasms - Amitriptyline
Anybody else take Amitriptyline for this?
My urologist prescribed 25 mg. Worked like a charm on PFS. Also helped with my migraines and sleep. About 1 week in, I started feeling extreme anger for no reason. (Had to switch from Prozac.)
My psychiatrist said the anger was because my dosage wasn't high enough, so he prescribed 50 mg. Anger is gone - feeling great there. But PFS and migraines are back, sleep is crappy, and now I have Tinnitus. It was a miracle pill at first -- until the anger came. Should I talk to my psychiatrist about possibly meeting in the middle with 37.5 mg?? Should I ask him to go back to 25mg and see if there's something else for the anger? I really need to stay on Amitriptyline for the PFS!
HELP!!!

@pataroo69 welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. My story may not be applicable to yours at all but here goes (in case there’s something helpful to you).
21 years ago I had a pancreas transplant. I ended up catheterized for a period of time. Turns out there was a problem with the catheter placement and it had to be removed several times and a new one inserted. My body reacted to this with bladder spasms. I also developed some bladder retention / urine retention after the temporary period of catheterization was over. (It took awhile for normal urination to resume.)
What really helped the bladder spasms turned out to be what I thought was a rather strange treatment. It was waxy suppositories inserted anally. They were infused with Belladona (sp?) and Opium (sp?). They were called
B & O suppositories. The reasoning was to relax everything in my nether regions while preventing the potentially addictive problems of consuming an oral medication. I do recall that they were very effective and they were only needed for a week or two (maybe a month) until The catheter was discontinued.
We members here aren’t professional medical providers so we shouldn’t be diagnosing or prescribing but maybe you can ask your provider about this for the treatment of your “PFS”?
@cehunt57 Belladonna....that's interesting. I'll have to check that out. I already take opioids for sciatica, so I wonder if you can take it orally and get the same results. So far, I've had some good luck with cutting down to 37.5mg of Amitriptyline for PFS. The InterStim seems to be helping with the overactive bladder some. At this point, any relief is great!
I'll definitely ask my urologist about the Belladonna. Thanks so much!!
