Pathology report - how long after RP?
My husband is doing really well after RP last week - no pain, no GI discomfort, walking around, sleeping well. Today, 7 days after surgery, is his post-op visit - will the pathology report be ready? What else can he expect, other than catheter removal (which he is thrilled about).

My father had his catheter removal after 10 days of RP. He did not get the pathology report until another two weeks.
My pathology was out 3 days after the RP.
My cath came out in 10 days and that's when my surgeon and I discussed the pathology report. The report was available 3-4 days after surgery on the hospital portal. Looking back, it probably would have been better for me to wait and digest it with the surgeon there to answer questions and explain ramifications of certain parts. There was a lot on there I didn't originally understand and it caused some unnecessary anxiety for me.
I would expect his report to be ready also. Mine was 3 to 4 days after RALP also.
I agree with web265. You really need your first PSA to be completed 3 months after the surgery. To me that would be the ideal time to meet with your urologist and review the pathology report in detail.
Update: Doc very pleased with recovery, husband very pleased with catheter removal. No results yet - doc said they're usually ready within a week, but Labor Day weekend slowed things down. Expects them by tomorrow or Monday and will schedule a zoom to discuss. Don't know if they show up in portal first. Next appointment and PSA in 6 weeks. Sounds like every place has a totally different protocol.
On another note, visit was very long because of cystogram procedure/scan before cath removal. Did any of you have that?
I did not have the cystogram (at least not at that time), they just whipped out that cath and sent me packin'. LOL
Hello,
I received my pathology report about a week after my surgery. The Mayo Clinic called me. I receive, in my case, an unwelcome report. Cancer was detected in one of eight tested lymph nodes. I never had a follow-up visit. A couple of weeks later I received a call from the radiation dept and later from the urology dept. Jerry
Oh no, have you had follow-up treatment?
Hello,
I had surgery in Jan 2022. I talked with the radiation doctor (Zoom conference) about two weeks afterwards . He proposed 39-radiation treatments. I was hesitant to get the radiation because of it’s side effects. Undecided, I thought it over for two weeks and had another Zoom meeting. I said I planned on waiting a year and see what my situation was. I was surprised that he agreed and hear him say, “we’ll probably have a better idea of exactly where the cancer is located.” He then referred me an oncology doctor.
The doctor wanted me to come to the Mayo Clinic and refused to do a Zoom meeting. I pushed back my appointment for a month because COVID-19 was spiking again. So by the time I had my appointment it had been two months. The doctor proposed 24 months of ADT (Lupron) shots. We discussed the mortality rates if I got the shots or did nothing. I said I wanted to try the Mediterranean Diet because it has been shown to inhibit the grow of cancer. The doctor agreed, and set me up for PSA testing every three months for two years. The good news, it’s going well. My PSA has been in the undetectable range now for almost two years. I’ve had one Zoom meeting, a year ago. The doctor was quite enthusiastic about my recovery. Starting in January 2024, I’ll get my PSA checked every six months.
I’m feeling blessed as my cancer is in remission; I’ve been physically active and am enjoying life.
I hope this encourages others to look at a heathy diet option. Jerry
