Papillary thyroid cancer total removal or left lobe only?

Posted by gram46 @gram46, Mar 14, 2023

Recently had a fna on left lobe nodule, 1.4 cm, TR5.
Right lobe has .9 cm nodule (no fna done)
need to decide on extent or surgery, given choice of full or lobectomy.
have read pros and cons of each. but confused as what to do

has anyone had experience with lobectomy and later needing 2nd surgery for removal of other lobe.
thanks

I cant comment on your question, but sending you support as you await results. I recently had five fna biopsies on a similar size nodule also TR5, and it was benign. Hope the same for you!

I had a lobectomy 8 months ago and so far the other lobe does not appear to have cancer. A lobectomy might prevent you from having to take Synthroid which can be tricky to regulate. I had to start Synthroid for hypothyroidism however Im hopeful that my other lobe will work enough to keep the dosage down. I just changed endocrinologists so we will see. Good luck!

Alright, @gram46, I will be keeping you in my thoughts. There's comfort in knowing it will be removed so you won't have to worry about it anymore, and in knowing that these cancers have such a high cure rate. Stay strong and faithful!

I am 74yrs - in 1976 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, I was operated on and all my thyroid gland was removed and I was given radiation treatment for 28 days. Since then I have taken Thyroxine tablets every day. I am still alive and well and I thank all doctors and nurses at the Royal Hospital for their excellent care.

I had been told to increase my synthoid and I just didn’t feel well, so I decided to change endocrinologists to try and figure out if there was a better plan.
I just met with a new endocrinologist and he thinks I might be able to lower my dose of Synthroid; and if my numbers stay low, we might be able to try and lower it again. From what I was told, the usual plan (for Hurthle Cell Carcinoma) is to keep the TSH number as low as possible, however the new doctor told me that some people do not do well with the high dose of Synthroid. He looked at my thyroid numbers before surgery, and said we could try lowering my dose as long as the number stays in “my usual range.” he also said, if the numbers stay in range we might be able to try to keep lowering it…..maybe even stop using it!!! I won’t know until I try it…and see how I feel and how follow up tests go.
I am happy to get to try reducing the dose because it did not seem to agree with me. ( I had suggested to my previous doctor looking at my thyroid numbers before I had the lobectomy, however she did not think it mattered or would help…..I prefer trying things out before dismissing them!) I am hopeful that I will fell more like my self again.

@gram46, when will you have your lobectomy? What helped you make the decision?

i just came home from having the second 1/2 of my thyroid surgery on the left side. no cancer. i too, debated whether or not to have the surgery, but, who knows what is lurking in there, so the dr. said i done so well that i could go home. however, now i don't know whether or not to take the thyroid pill my husband had to go after. it is 2:30 pm and surgery at 7. i have told ya all about the right radical neck and throat, lost the right vocal chord. 11 lymph nodes out of 19 had cancer, dr. said he got it all. so that is where i am right now. i have been praying for each and every one of you as this is really mind blowing when you find out what's what. i wish all of you the best.

scheduled for first week in June.

Decided on lobectomy based on dr recommendation, extensive research and on the hope that I will not need to take meds afterward
