Pain patches and creams

Posted by bayhorse @bayhorse, Dec 2, 2023

Are any of the pain reducing patches or creams on the market unscented? I am extremely sensitive to fragrances and can't use products with strong odors, but I really need to get something to manage pain in the hip/hamstring/adductor/psoas area.

Do you mind if I ask what shampoo you use. Even the unsented seem to be scented.
Have you an idea what is causing the pain?

Hi, @bayhorse, I use a prescription 5% lidocaine patch for arthritis. It has no fragrance or scent that I’ve detected. The generic I receive is manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals, size is 10 cm x 14 cm. My Dr. told me I could use up to 3 at a time if the pain is widespread. It’s very effective. You’ll need a script from your physician, and your pharmacist can tell you what brand they stock.

I also occasionally use Diclofenac Sodium topical gel, 1%. The last tube I purchased was Voltaren gel, which is available OTC. It has what I consider a medicinal smell which I don’t notice once it dries after application. It is very effective. There are other brands of the same medication. Maybe a pharmacist can advise you which has the least ‘fragrance’.

I use both Dicolofenac patches as well as 5% Lidocaine patches and notice no smell. Perhaps see if that might work. The Diclofenac gel does have a little odor but it doesn't bother me. Patches seem to have less.

I also use a 5% lidocaine patch. It’s a prescription, so doctor calls it in. I get considerable relief from it. No odor.

Hi, gently. The shampoo I use is Attitude Unscented Blueberry leaves. No smell at all.

As to my pain: Generally speaking, degenerative changes in my spine and hips are the cause of the worst pain. But I've got osteoarthritis in most of my joints. Thanks very much for the tip about the odorless Aspercreme. I do appreciate!

Hi, susanfalcon52, and thanks for the tip about the lidocaine patch. None of my many physicians have offered me this in spite of my describing the pain. What kind of doctor is prescribing for you?

Thanks, sjd416. Are there any side effects from the lidocaine patches? And what kind of physician prescribed these for you? None of my doctors has even mentioned patches to me, and I've been struggling with joint and muscle pain for quite some time!

I used those Salonpas patches before I had hip surgery & spinal fusion
and they worked for an evening when I had to attend my high school reunion.
Temporary help at least.
