Pain during hearing test?

Posted by beckyseattle @beckyseattle, Jan 19 10:29am

I’ve worn hearing aids for 30+ years, but this is a new one for me. And it’s my 50-yr old daughter.
She just started the testing to qualify for a cochlear implant. But during the pure tone part of the test, they had to stop because she had terrible pain on certain frequencies.
They referred her to a hospital-based audiology office in the “big city” ( we live in a suburb of Seattle), but I’d like to have much more info.
Any ideas, suggestions?
Thanks- Becky

I’m not sure what ototoxicity or mechanism of hearing loss she has besides SSNL, but my daughter experienced this after jaundice. Very, very painful with certain sounds in the booth, that progressively became better.
I’m not sure what you have encountered otherwise but I’d love to know more and triage her further to correctly address the situation. I have a great audiologist in Logan, Utah who is the the cochlear implant center and development named Kali Markle. She is in pediatrics, but she does “complex auditory brain stem testing” using Nancy tye Murray’s (she’s written 6 editions of aural rehabilitation I’m happy to share with you 🙂 diagnostics. But having this testing done with certain frequencies could tell us why your daughter has pain with certain frequencies, and what treatments are affective!! I’m not sure how to get you our information but I added all my references below. I hope they help!!
