Other NON-drug oriented forums

Do you follow any other Osteoporosis groups that are not mostly about drugs?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

Lani Simpson has been a proponent of alternative approaches. I believe she ultimately did Tymlos and may be doing other meds. Keith McCormick wrote "The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis" and "Great Bones" but took Forteo and Fosamax himself to "get out of a hole." There are some sites online but make sure to research any claims.

Some docs are medicating too early, or using the wrong sequence of drugs. McCormick writes that those with DEXA scores over -3.0 (or maybe it was -3.3?) could consider alternative approaches. His books are excellent resources and he has some YouTube videos you might like. Hope others come along with some suggestions (and that your bones are relatively okay!)

Thank you for this info......I always do lots of research, no matter what medication or treatment the doc presribes. It is not that I am refuting what he says, but I want to do what is best for me,
and what my body is capable of handling. We have to be our own advocate for our health.

@debkincai, you're right. Healthy bones and living with osteoporosis includes more than medications. It can seem like forums focus on medications and that is usually because deciding on treatment requires research and asking lots of questions. We're lucky that there are options.

If you'd like to generate more discussion about lifestyle options that help osteoporosis, I encourage you to create activity in the many discussions related to exercise, vitamin D, and calcium in your diet in this group.

You can use the Search field on the group page to find specific discussions. For example, I used the keyword 'exercise' and got these results:
- Exercise and osteoporosis https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/osteoporosis/?search=exercise&index=discussions

What osteoporosis topics do you want to talk more about?

Excuse my rudeness…didn’t mean to imply this forum isn’t good…invaluable for those taking meds. We have talked on this forum about various topics like exercise, vibration platforms, diet, LiftMOR, but there aren’t a lot of us so I am just looking for other groups/more people/more experience. No criticism intended!

Irma Jennings on ytube is a great resource for optimal bone nutrition, IMO

I don’t know of any “all natural” osteoporosis forums. But in addition to the other Doctors mentioned try following Dr Doug Lucas. He uses meds as a last resort.
I’ve learned a lot from the Mayo forum but it seems that all natural post eventually get turned into a push for meds…

If there were threads involving people with DEXA scores that are over -3.0 and no fractures, I think meds would not be mentioned. There is a sentiment that bone loss is inevitable after menopause and only meds can address that. I guess I consider hormones to be meds too.

If someone's score is -2.8, I think there is a lot of good advice out there including those providers mentioned. Check out Margaret Martin as well at melioguide.com.

Inspire has an osteoporosis forum but the posters there don't seem to post as thoroughly as folks do here on the Mayon Clinic Connect. There is one poster, Dexaguru, who is very knowledgeable.

I don't know of a forum that fits your description. Other sources I do know of are:
Lani Simpson who Windyshores mentioned has a Facebook group called "Dr. LANI'S OSTEOPOROSIS - MYTHS & FACTS". Lani is very knowledgeable and tries to cover both drug and non-drug approaches. She has a good book on osteoporosis also. And she has a weekly master class thing that requires a monthly fee.

Margie Bissinger PT at margiebissinger.com has a lot of info both drug and non-drug. She recently hosted a summit that had some good speakers. And she has a youtube channel.

The one that I know of that is very no meds is Susan Brown's betterbones.com. Not sure how much of a forum type thing is happening there? I personally do not like her thinking on a number of osteo topics but I have read what she has to say.

I think the people who have I have gleaned the most from are Lani Simpson, Keith McCormack, Belinda Beck from her research (LIFTMOR etc), plus Benjamin Leder and Felica Cosman on sequential osteoporosis therapy. Oh, and the thoughtful folks on forums like this one.

After 6 doctors said I needed to take Phosamx I consulted with Dr Keith Mccormick.
He has books on Amazon too.
And no when properly diagnosed I did not need any meds. His consults were money well spent.
