Osteoporosis and Prunes

Posted by gailfaith @gailfaith, Feb 1, 2017

I just ran across an article (not a recognized medical magazine) that states the eating 5-6 prunes a day can reverse osteoporosis? Anyone know anything about the possible connection? or see anything to this effect in a reputable medical source? @gailfaith

Hi. How would you fix Stewed prunes please? Thx much. @lakis

I would suggest adding water just to cover and then a low, light simmer (rather than a boil) just for a short time until soft. Consume both the prunes and the water. The water will be very sweet and will also help keep things moving!

Gee whiz I didn't know that prunes can help with bone loss. That was a good idea to cook the prunes and to save the water. Sounds very interesting - will give it a try.

Prunes do not reverse osteoporosis.

Prunes are a good source of Vitamin K. But so are leafy greens. On it's own it would be helpful, but I don't think it's a solution to bone loss without lots of other interventions, dietary, exercise and lifestyle. If this actually worked, we wouldn’t be troubled by osteoporosis!

This article says that eating 5 or 6 Prunes a Day May Help Preserve Bone Health. THAT"S VERY DIFFERENT THAN REVERSING OSTEOPOROSIS!!!!

The study itself states: "Prune consumption for 12 months preserved cortical bone structure and estimated bone strength at the weight-bearing tibia in postmenopausal women". Preserving what you have is not the same as "reversing osteoposoris" to my understanding, although it sounds like a great benefit.

I have just gotten over three burst compression fractures at 78. I’ve been eating 6 prunes a day for o ER four months. It’s not the calcium in them but the Vitamin K and D that are crucial plus boron. They don’t necessarily increase bone density from my extensive study but they greatly help slow down bone loss. Good luck to you.

just wanted to note that prunes do not contain vitamin D.

We used to put sliced lemon in the stewing water. Delicious.
