How can I get an MRI with an Cochlear (Osia) implant?

Posted by mayers @mayers, Sep 6, 2022

I understand that I can't have an MRI for my upper back problem
which the Dr. ordered unless the implant in removed. Has any one had the device temporarily removed and how difficult is the surgery. Can they numb your head or do you need to have anesthesia. Any advise would be appreciated.

Good question, @mayers. I added your post to the Hearing Loss group as well so that other members who have Cochlear implants like @julieo4 @sam2678 @alomax92 @arieswoman @lmayo @lizzy102 can share what they know. I'm not sure they have had MRIs in the past or not.

While we wait for others to weigh in, I found these articles:
- MRI and medical considerations: What you need to know about getting an MRI with a Cochlear™ Nucleus®, Baha®, or Osia® implant: https://www.cochlear.com/us/en/home/ongoing-care-and-support/device-help-and-support/mri-and-medical-considerations
- FDA Cochlear Implants and MRI Safety https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/cochlear-implants/cochlear-implants-and-mri-safety

When are you scheduled to have the MRI?

The links provided by Colleen Young provide most of the information you need. The implant doesn't need to be removed. The magnet does. Magnet removal is a relatively easy procedure.

Did your MD consider using a CAT scan rather than an MRI knowing you have an implant?

I have not had an MRI since my CI but my doctor told me that MRI's are not above a 5 which he said was safe these days. Sorry I can't be of more help.
