oral and vulva lichen planus for years with no long term relief
Has anyone heard of any new treatments for vulva lichen planus My dermatologist just started me on Methotrexate 2mg once week. with folic acid every day except I take once week tablet. I have it so badly. The pain is terrible, all the skin peels and at times bleeds. Going to bathroom is excruciating. I also have in my mouth but I found a way to help it. I eat NO hot and spice food. I use electric tooth brush and ONLY baking soda on it to brush. My periodontist said I might be allergic to toothpaste. I rinse my mouth chlorhexidine when it is really bad. This seems to help some. I've used many different types of topical creams and ointments. I'm 82 and have had since I was in my early 60. They treated me for years for yeast infection which never helped.

Do you have allergies like to eggs? Majority of the toothpaste can take egg whites. That is why it falls up. I too have the I to have the lichen My allergy doctor told me to use Tom‘s strawberry children, fluoride, free, and something else, That has helped. I’ve been using it for over two years now and my mouth feels a lot better.
For my bottom, I use cotton toilet paper, All other toilet paper is made from wood and they use many chemicals to get it soft. These are just a few things I have found to help. But maybe you should be checked for an egg allergy that’s in a lot of things. Eggs are and toothpaste, shampoo, dish soap, laundry soap, and soap on.
Sorry to hear, but I do wish you the very best. Take care.
Thanks I was tested bout 4mos ago and only thing was allergic to food wise was cinnamon, which I've used all my life. I've stopped that now
I switched to many different toothpaste, not one suggested, but that didn't help. He said it is sodium something . I wonder may times if it inherited. Also, if all the medicines we take have anything to do with it.
I have oral lichen planus and vulvar since I was around fifty eight and now I'm sixty five.Check out what drugs can trigger lichen planus, because after consulting with both my dermatologist and family doctor
I stopped taking metoprolol after reading about it as a trigger on many medical sites, including the mayo clinic and up pub.Med.
The uh lesions on my back have nearly cleared, but the other sites are still a problem. But not quite as severe. I'm sure you have already used clobetosol on both your mouth and vulvar area. There is also tacrolimus which I have not used yet, but know, it might be a good option.
I had to go off Methotrexate completely because of the horrible mouth ulcers and pain. I was taking it for lupus. Stopping the Methotrexate has helped the mouth ulcers significantly and I don’t feel like it has made my Lupus symptoms any worse. I have never heard of only taking it once a week? I question how necessary it is for you? You may want to try going off it for a period of time and see if that helps your lichen?
I also don’t do spicy foods, or anything acidic or carbonated which includes citrus, Tomato sauce, ketchup, bbq sauce, wine etc. It’s very limiting but it helps. For the Vulva, I would try coating the area with a petroleum jelly like Vaseline, before urinating. It will cover and protect the sores from the urine.
They are learning more and more about genetics and how family traits go from one generation to the next. It could be very easily explained by where we live the food that we eat growing up and other things that affected our health as we age..

I am 84 and have had the oral part of lichen planus - off and on, about 7 yrs, and recently noticed that i have little red bumps on my leg, here and there, i suspect it is lichen planus since i have not been biten by bugs and they do not itch. My immune system is raging right now due to a recurrent gastrointestinal problem I am also dealing with, and that doctor wants to put on about 2 months long antibiotics that are, no doubts, make OLP worse.
I do AI first place to check and get at least the basic info on my problem, I find extremely helpful especially when you need to discuss it with your doctor - and often I find out more from AI than from my doctors, it pulls information from multiple materials on the net that contains the specific piece you are looking for, and displays them in one text with lots of bullets & explanations. I am going through the same thing, OLP + red bumps on my legs.
Forums are great, knowing other people go thru the same, helps. I am in California btw.
I have look at AI and printed out just in case there is something I have had or tried. I'll show my dematologist. Thanks
Sugar is one of my bad offenders with my inherited oral lichen planus. Since I have eliminated it from my diet, my breakouts have diminished to rare. I also can’t eat raw pecans and walnuts.
I don't eat raw nuts but sugar is very much part of my diet. Im going to try to cut out sugar. This will be very hard. I used it for 82 yrs.
