One of my breasts feels heavier than the other?

Posted by ehdog @ehdog, 2 days ago

Why does one of my breasts feel heavier than the other? The smaller one feels heavier. Which I assume isn't supposed to happen. But I felt both with my hands and the smaller one feels heavier.

It isn’t abnormal. There are a few possible reasons. One side can hold onto more fluid, especially around your cycle, which can make it feel heavier or fuller. Muscle tension can also cause this, and favoring one side while sleeping can lead to mild swelling or pressure.
It could also be that your smaller breast has denser tissue, which can make it feel heavier as well.

This isn’t something to worry about.

No, you shouldn’t worry about breast cancer. This is something that happens, and almost every woman experiences it at some point, either occasionally or all the time.

First, welcome to Mayo Connect. It is a safe place to ask these types of questions and find out about other experiences. As others have mentioned, it could be for a variety of reasons.

If you're concerned or if there is a change in how your breast normally feels, you should contact your provider. Have you ever had a mammogram?

I would talk with your doctor. Anytime there is a change in one’s breast it should be checked.
The person ahead of me knows there are stuff.

It's a good idea as was suggested to see your doctor. The heaviness may be only part of the problem. There may be something else going on that you aren't aware of yet. Also it could be nothing at all out of the ordinary but by seeing your doctor you would know for sure. I'm 79 and one of my breasts started to hang lower than the other. I went to my doctor and she said it was nothing to worry about and that as you age muscles weaken which is all it was.

I will say a prayer for you.
I wish you the best.

Thank you. I'm almost 27 so I don't know if that's my issue but I started my period 2 hours ago and I'm wondering if that's my issue!

Not only is it not unusual, it’s normal. One side always is slightly larger than the other. If they’re identical, they’re implants.

Starting your period could be the issue but seeing your doctor would make certain if that's what it was. Also if there was something more going on, you are only 27 and your body could heal better with a problem now than if you are 79 like I am! I'll say a prayer for you.
