Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use
i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

I've trying to slowly wean off pantoprazole. I've take it for 2.5 years, one year at 40mg then 20mg after that. Every few days, I substitute Pepcid 20mg twice a day instead. I've tried this before and wasn't successful. But like you, I have osteoporosis so really want to get off it. How did you transition and do you take only Pepcid now?
Went & saw my Gastro yesterday & was interviewed & questioned by an intern that was trying to play the part until I said so YOU are going to REPEAT what I tell YOU to HER ? Then my Gastro comes in not friendly because I have NOW included her & my primary & another Gastro that's more into the Live in a medical 3 way text so to speak with the guise of gett you ALL on the SAME page. She played all the Prilosec / Omeprazole down saying your endoscopy & Colonoscopy were fine & just because you're borderline anemic & magnesium has gone too low before kidneys & creatinine are ALL out of norm & have been last 5 years NO worries for your age. Take Imodium every other day. Eat fiber take metamucil bla bla. OR you can take 40mg Famotidine 2X a day. The ONLY difference I SEE if it would control the heartburn is its less aggressive to the kidneys but pretty much ALL the same side effects. Had some sort of Sono this morn on stomach. I feel CERTAIN my GI issues are from the meds
My Gastro tried to convince me that it's the Over the Counter PPI's that are ONLY for 14 days ? That the studies people quote either were BLIND or not BLIND studies whatever she was trying to say but that my Colonoscopy & Edoscopy show NO signs of damage ?
So frustrating!! I’m sick of being so sick 🤢 every single day and getting worse, 11 years now .
Drs just can’t figure this out .
I feel for all of us that have been dealt this hand .
Going to see one more Gastro Monday that's more about Liver but he is supposed to be really goo & over the liver wing & a surgeon & pick his brain. He ordered the sono I had today & ordered tests 2 years ago that were liver related & supposedly NO Cirrhosis etc. My Gastro actually ask me WHAT are you AFRAID of ? Your Endoscopy & Colonoscopy show nothing to WORRY about ? Well lets SEE How would you like your life to revolve around a toilet ? Explained I was convinced my gut issues were from the Prilosec & her only reply was take Imodium 3 times a week & eat fiber ? That's NOT a FIX that's throwing MORE pills at it.
Omg I do agree !! Please let me know what new Dr. says . I’m rooting for you .
Been another horrendous day here . Barely ate . The up 3 x this am . Then finally ate some dinner and had the worst of the 4 diarrheas of the day .
Heart ❤️ palps kicked up . Just misery all around.
Just a break once a week would be Amazing to me .
It never happens not in 11 years.
The sad thing is it’s only getting worse. I look 50 and I’m 62 but feel 100 .
Keep in touch 🙏
I meant I threw up 🤮 3 x this morning after 1 piece of toast .
Not up 3 x . This nausea is knocking me out with all my other major gastrointestinal issues!

Remember the OTC PPIs that are only recommended for 14 days started out as Hospital IV only. The research studies were obviously double blind - pointed out probably just to emphasize it was credible research. Or perhaps the research to the market was not double blind and she is saying it deserves to be discounted and dismissed. . In any event it was modified to pill form and put on the market initially as prescription only in the 80’s.
As one who stayed on Prilosec or Nexium for FOURTEEN YEARS and am paying the price now with microscopic colitis. And my colon didn't show damage either. Until I got symptoms and biopsies of the colon proved to be collagenous colitis.
Ive weaned off Both Ibuprofen and PPIs since both are
medication triggers for
Microscopic colitis - a horrendous condition. I was successfully treated with a colin-specific steroid but it still flares from time to time. I take pepcid for reflux.
So I’m a traveling preacher now, screaming to get off drugs that have a shelf Life of 14 days. 🙂
I hope thats useful.
She said she took several biopsies last June & all was well. ALL I know is something isn't right & I DON'T like the idea of Prilosec / Omeprazole or Famotidine other than the latter is less aggressive or hard on the kidneys. ALL the other sides seem about the same. Ironicall the young tech doing my stomach sono had a horrific story about how her & another tech were scanning each other & she saw something on her neck / throat. ASK for another person to do it & they said it was OK. She kept pushing & the radiologist or whoever said it was OK. She pushed for & finally got a biopsy & had thyroid cancer. Has since treated & now its back & having to fight again. It's RIDICULOUS. People with our lives in their hands & aren't qualified to stock the Dairy at Walmart. We've watered down to a level of a few classes & hours & you have a title & are doing things you should have NEVER been assigned to do. RAISE the COST & LOWER the STANDARDS.
I'm NOT doing it NOW but before I did & my reg Gastro said same thing I DID do awhile back & it seemed to help other than sometimes went the other way & got stopped up. Take an Imodium every other day. I just took a half of one once a day. For nausea I use Emetrol it's cheap at Wally World & usually works in about 15 mins.
