Side effects with omeprazole/Prilosec use

Posted by blueorca @blueorca, May 5, 2018

i am an 18-year user of daily OTC Prilosec. It does a perfect job of controlling my GERD but I am constantly battling side effects of nutritional deficiencies in iron, B-12, magnesium, etc. For example, my hair is extremely thin and loss of energy is a constant problem. I am looking for specific help in knowing which supplements to take for this and in what doses and formats and on what schedule. All the nutritionists I've found locally are not well-versed in Prilosec use. Is there a medical provider out there who specializes in this? And would they be willing to work with me long distance?

We weaned off our acid reflux meds very slowly. The possible long term side effect of taking acid reflux meds concerned us. I brought empty capsules and made our own capsules as we slowly weaned off. Now, i juice 16 ounces of celery every morning for myself and husband. . We drink it before our coffee and wait about 30 minutes. And, we drink a teaspoon of Braggs apple cider vinegar (the mother) each morning before breakfast. I hope this is helpful.

Does drinking celery juice plus Braggs ACV totally rid your stomach of acids

I drink one cup of instant Kava coffee a day which is acid neutralized and buy it by the case from the company as it doesn’t get shelf space at local grocery stores here. I also drink low acid Tropicana orange juice. I avoid fried foods, spicy food, high fat food and acidic foods. Yet I still need my 40mg omeprazole each day. I have been on it over 30 years and tried substitutes without success. Before omeprazole I would vomit acid so I rely on it to prevent damage to my throat and stomach. No alcohol for me either as a generous serving of Mogan David wine a few years back set me up with a stomach ulcer which was very painful. I am 72 and as long as I stay this course my digestive health is tolerable.

Regarding coffee, it is not so much the caffeine I avoid, it’s the acid. Even regular instant has acid. I found the acid neutralized coffee by “Kava” has worked for me and it tastes so good my visitors become converts after drinking it.

@musicflowers4u I agree with the acid versus caffeine idea. I have found that even decaf can cause symptoms. Low acid is much better.

From my own personal experience the apple cider makes it worse. However, each person reacts differently. I have never tried the celery juice. Anyone tried the celery juice?

I have a question. Why does coffee not bother me but home made "koolaide" does? I wondered if it was because of the citric acid in the pwderdered ingredients. Or, perhaps the coffee actually does bother me, and I don't feel it until much later, after it has done its' damage. I have coffee in the morning and my asthma medicine is much reduced because of it. My doctor agrees. It concerns me a bit, because I know there can be damage to the esophagus if GERD is left untreated. Any ideas? Yours for a peaceful day, Mamacita

Dear @destinnana , This is the first I am hearing about celery juice. I will look into this as I am on the same meds everyone else is. I hate taking medicine for every little thing because I know that good, healthy food and the proper supplements can do wonders for the body. I always tell my PCP about whatever I want to add to my regimen. He is totally open to natural solutions. Thank you for sharing this part of your story. Who knows? Maybe I will be a celery juice convert! Hugs,
Mamacita

You are the best judge of how you feel. Personally my trade-off for any long-term problem from omeprazole is better than cancer from GERD, my choice. Best wishes.

Dear @musicflowers4u, I am wafting towards the way you plan to deal with this situation. Honestly, I have not studied this subject in much detail. Been very busy lately. But, I will say this. My Mother had GERD and it went untreated until she had to go to the Nursing Home. Unfortunately, she died from congestive heart failure and stomach/esophageal cancer. She had been a smoker all her life, and I do believe that contributed to her death. Until I have time to thoroughly research the issue, I will continue the medication. Thank you for sharing!

Blessings,
Mamacita

I have been so sick for months and Prilosec has worsened conditions. I need help but can’ t help when trying to talk with PCP. My doctors can’t listen to side effects. Lost well over 30 lbs because I cannot Sleep or eat. I also am told this is all in my head. Two years ago, same doctor tells me I have MAC but reaction to meds was very bad. I saw someone made up list of foods she has played around with but can’t find her. I have had achalasia but told before surgery this was all in my head.
