non-erosive reflux disease causing chocking
I have been diagnosed with nonerosive reflux disease and last year I have had two incidents in which I could not breathe and someone had to help me with the Heimlich manouver because my lips turned blue and I almost lost consciousness. Can reflux cause these incidents? What can I do apart from taking pantrozal recommended by the doctor?

Food can back up with acid reflux but have they checked your esophagus?
I had an endoscopy and they found i have nonerosive reflux disease. Do you know if the colonoscopy includes check of esophagus or there is another test to do it?
Please don't just assume it is Reflux. I have reflux and assumed it was causing my choking, but found out that I have a spastic esophagus and the opening at my esophagus and stomach doesn't work properly, which can exacerbate the condition. Please tell your GI and have them do extensive checking. Oh, and it doesn't have to be food that causes the problem. I have more problems with liquids than with foods.
P
I have a similar condition. Jackhammer esophagus. I have never so far choked on food, I take very small bites, but agree that liquid is more problematic. Water for instance. Can't drink a lot very fast, I choke. I bought a device called Iqoro (Google it) and it has definitely improved my swallowing. Unfortunately, they don't ship to the US since it's not been approved by the FDA. Too bad for all the people who suffers in this country.
I don’t have choking or coughing but I do have excessive mucus in my throat especially after eating or drinking. ENT says it is reflux. I am having an EGD and they will attach a capsule to my esophagus and this is the only way to know for sure if it is reflux. Mine has been going on for over ten years. I seriously doubt that I can have LPR for so long without damaging my esophagus. I know a lady whose esophagus was detached from her stomach due to the acid.
Thanks for sharing this information . Based ob my reading it looks like my issue is i may have laryngospasm. Does any of you have this issue? Thanks in advance
I have never been diagnosed but I was taking muscle relaxers for early onset of arthritis in my right hip. But they made big difference in the tightness of my throat.
Thanks
GERDS can definitely cause you to reflux and aspirate. You need your esophagus scoped. You need to know if you have a stricture which is scarring in your esophagus caused by acidic reflux which can cause food to get stuck causing and accumulation of saliva which if you're not careful can cause you to aspirate as well. It does go down eventually. Also, you need to know if your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is wide open or is it closing properly. I had a LINX band placed and a failed Nissan reversed back in 2019. Esophageal spasms are also a real thing. That causes food and liquids to get stuck as well. For me, that was caused by stress. Depending on how long you've had this problem the Doctor should also check for Barrets esophagus which can be precancerous.
Do your own research. You absolutely MUST be your own advocate. Never ever be a passive patient.
Thanks Silvias your information is really helpful.
I have this issue since I was 15 years old and it is aggravating this year with 2 serious chocking incidents (I am 63 now) . I have a doctor appointment today and will discuss these issues with her.
