Non-drug tips on reducing anxiety

Posted by judybradford @judybradford, Oct 27 12:12pm

If you are looking for non-pharmaceutical tips or solutions to relieving anxiety, I have a couple:

1) Try humming quietly. You can do this in any crowd, or where loud sound is overwhelming you. Think of any song you love, and just hum it. I first learned about this from a ballet instructor, who told us to hum to ourselves to achieve a softer, more compassionate effect in our movements. It's self care through "song" but you don't have to mouth the words.
2) A weighted blanket or vest. A weighted blanket can give you the feeling of security, especially at night when your thoughts start churning in your brain and start to make you feel anxious. On the weighted vest: I often walk with one (10-15 pounds is enough) to help make my bones stronger. But one day, I noticed how it made me feel calmer when I put it on, and tightened it. It's like getting a big hug from someone.
I would love to hear any more ideas that readers may have.

Meditation works for me as does deep belly breathing.

I was told to look around my surrounding and count 5 things you see, colors of things, how 5 things feel, smell, etc.

Because I have a neurological disorder I have tremors when I get stressed so I’ve been given these tools

Check out Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as "tapping".

There are many, many YouTube videos to help you work through anxiety of all kinds, from general anxiety to specific situations. A quick YouTube search for * EFT tapping anxiety * will give you many to choose from.

Some of my favorite practitioners are Julie Schiffman, Brad Yates, and Carol Look.

It may seem a little weird at first, but give it a try. It has helped me a *lot* since my stroke.
And believe me, having a stroke will give you plenty to be anxious about.

While you're on YT, check out my channel about my stroke recovery:

These are all good suggestions and healthy! When I get anxious, I pray. It relaxes me. I'm mostly anxious when I have to drive the car. I just say, "God, please be with me." and he always is. I also try and drive in the morning when traffic is lighter. That helps. When I'm finally home in my own driveway and turn the car off, I say a thank you prayer.

Thank you for the kind message! It is so true! We need God and Jesus and all the angels now more than ever! This world has gotten so bad that you can tell it's the last days. Satan is running scared because his time is short. However with faith in God, we will be fine and all of our anxiety will melt away!
You made my day with your comment!

Humming is good. Works to soothe babies, why not adults too? I wear heavy weighted sweatshirts and pants from Comfort brand. I have started wearing them to bed so I am also warmer and can put the hood up. Sounds a bit weird, but it works for me. Also, an app with Bible reading and background noises (rain, Ocean, etc). It helps greatly. AND, you can always hug yourself. 😉
