Nocturia is so annoying!

Posted by kenhorse @kenhorse, Sep 27, 2025

I usually get up 1 or 2 times a night to pee. Interestingly, the first time is usually after being asleep for 3 to 4 hours. The 2nd time is more like 1 to 2. During the day, I have no real issues with urgency and leak very little (maybe 3 or 4 ml). I don't leak at night but it's annoying! I don't have any liquids after 7 pm or so and I go to bed around 11:15 pm.

My urologist put me on oxybutynin once a day and that seems to help but I'm concerned about long term cognitive issues so he moved me over to tropsium as it is supposed to not cross the brain-blood barrier but I've read some things that says it does but it is less prone to.

Anyway, I'm more venting LOL. I am almost 3 years out from RARP.

I am going on 4 weeks post prostatectomy da Vinci, and I wake up each and every hour, from when I go to bed at around 8:30 pm to about 4:30 am. My overnight Depends is usually dry each time. I get a steady stream each time for about 10 to 20 seconds. Clean up, go back to bed, sleep peacefully for another hour, and it happens all over again, all night long. It’s kinda like “Groundhog Day”, the movie made here in Woodstock, IL. Over and over again and again! Back to the subject, I will call my oncologist on Monday and see what he says about it. In the meantime, I appreciate input, which I feel lucky to have this talk group! The good news is the f-ing Cancer is out of my body and the sacrifices that I made and make, make it all worth it. I’m only 75 years old and have a lot of reasons to stick around! Thanks!

@scottfish Yeah, it can really suck early on. All I can offer is maybe change your sleeping position.
For some reason, sleeping on my back made it worse; try your side.
Also, intestinal gas can cause issues since your sphincters are all haywire after that ‘delicate’ surgery; passing gas can make you pee at the same time!
Do those Kegels as much as possible every day to retrain the plumbing. Don’t worry, you’ll get there! Best,
Phil

I’m 2 1/2 years out of RP and had some issues with Nocturia. Surgeon said part of it might be effects on the Bladder from surgery. I read on article about a method for reducing bedtime urgencies. The doctor recommended wearing BAMBOO compression socks during the day and taking them off before bedtime. He said it will reduce nighttime urgencies. I’ve been doing it for about a month now and guess what? My nighttime trips have reduced significantly. I have five pairs that I wear regularly, and two additional pairs I wear when working out. I purchased them from Amazon. They are around 40% bamboo which I’ve found out is about as much as you can get. They cost me under $20 for three pairs. You might want to give it a try. The only thing you have to lose is getting up at night? Good luck!
