Vitamin D deficiency: anyone had this?

Posted by EllAmster @ellamster, Sep 4, 2022

I have had bad health issues for years. I would every once in a while tell my GP who then said it was all in my head, it was stress, it was the traumas. I told them I didn't go outside and didn't live and eat healthily, but nothing was done, they have a 'next' mentality so I recently switched GP. He immediately sent me to the lab for bloodwork. Not only that: the results came in not even two hours later!

I was diagnosed with major vitamin D deficiency. There are weird and very off values concerning muscle and mass as well, which only proves what I wrote about a while ago: I have lost so much muscle due to depression and only sitting on the sofa with the laptop for work. I haven't been outside in years, living an online life that was a bit easier to manage, avoiding extra stimuli that would create flare-ups of the traumas I worked on during therapy (which is still ongoing).

My major concern is: can the damage of this deficiency be reversed? I have had so many complaints about my health for YEARS that now seem to come together. I was so depressed for so long, have tingles and strange sensations all over my body especially in my legs, I can't concentrate and focus, am very forgetful, have headaches, high blood pressure and my heart doesn't even react well to the medication anymore. I am, all things considered, quite the mess.

Does anyone here have any experience with this?
I hardly go outside, I know I should get some sun, but this is not yet possible for me (too stressed, too much happened). I am a mess! I used to be outgoing and moderately active a few years ago but something bad happened and I'm working through it with help, until that time I won't go outside, but I think I may be getting there.

Yes! Vitamin D is really important. I’m wondering if it would help you to get one of those electric lights that simulates sunshine. Have you heard anything about this? People who live way up north, get depressed because of the darkness and use these lights.
Seasonal affective disorder SAD
Light therapy uses light boxes that produce a bright white light.
The light boxes can be purchased online, and in places like Walmart, and Home Depot.

Oh, I do hope you get some relief now that you have a very large piece of your puzzle back! 😸

Thanks SusanEllen!
Yes I heard about those lights, I will check them out. First waiting for the GP to call me 😊

My PCP and endocrinologist also think that people are overdoing vitamin D. (Similar to when people overdid vitamins E and A in the past, which was a problem with oil-based vitamins. We can 'pee away' vitamin C and a lot of the water-solubles but some of the oil-solubles build up in the system.) I take vitamin D3 and keep it under 1500 IU per day and it's balanced with algae-derived calcium, K2, magnesium, etc. And annual blood work includes testing D level.

I have low Vitamin D. Started with 5000 units every day and developed the debilitating bone pain. I would wake up at night crying in pain.
Once I stopped taking Vitamin D pain went away.
I have tried lower dose and this only raises my number very slightly.
Maybe if I took with Vitamin K that would help.??

A few years ago I had low vit. D. My doctor at the time gave me an injection. I don’t recall much more then this. I’d ask the doctor and pharmacist. The doctor should know about your symptoms if he/she doesn’t. Bone pain with a supplement….not sure. Don’t know about vit k. Hope you get some help.

A talk I heard (on Oxalates) recommended not taking Vitamin D at the same time you take a calcium supplement. This leads me to wonder if some folks difficulties with handling Vitamin D could be related to what they may be taking at the same time with it(?).

As for if deficiency damage can be reversed, for years I brought houseplants on the brink of loss to my mother who had a green thumb. To this day I still have plants going strong that her green thumb saved. In my opinion there is a art to both growing plants, and the practice of medicine. Some people do work wonders! I always think back to these plants as needed for inspiration.

I too have barely been out of my house since 2019 and low vit d and vit b showed up over a year ago; a clinic so have to do your own searching etc, and i bought some vit d and b but the b made my stomach upset and d insomnia so i stopped taking; i too have a myriad of other illnesses maybe connected? Yet some web sites warn about taking too many vitamins etc., so not sure what to do... i have a social worker zooming twice a month who is amazing but I just cannot get going again and now am wondering if i have something like fibromyalgia... but approaching 80 the nurses at the clinic don't seem too interested.... even I am not interested in myself anymore.. but feel for those younger who have medical problems... how i long for day or so of former normalcy!

When it comes to vitamins, because they affect so much of the body, I tend to want to talk to a really really good endocrinologist. Having said that, my endocrinologist recommends about 1200 units of vitamin D so maybe 5,000 units is too high. I do get some vitamin levels checked when I do routine blood work so that probably helps get the dose right. But, as hard as they are to find, a physician with a really thorough understanding of nutrition and vitamin needs, is the best place to get some personalized guidance.

I had a real struggle for years with very low Vitamin D. I tried several different prescription Vit D, and a number of different brands of OTC Vit D. None brought up my level adequately.

Finally, I tried Dr. Tod Cooperman's recommendation of Source Naturals Vitamin D-3 liquid drops, and it brought -- and has kept -- my level in the high-normal range. You hold it under your tongue for 30 seconds, then swallow. Pleasant, mild citrusy taste.

In the summer when I'm out in the sun swimming almost every day, my level goes up, and I just take fewer drops.
