New to this group and in total panic!
I will start out by saying I am 58 years old, in great health. I have been seeing my GP every 6 months for hypertension for the last 5 years or so. Shortly after starting meds for HBP, things down south started slowly fading away (ED) and I attributed this to the BP meds and age. My PSA 5 years ago was around 2, and last year it was 3. GP mentioned the bump up from 2-3, but wasn't concerned due to the 5 year gap in testing. This week I went in for my 6 month checkup, and they didn't do a PSA test. I mentioned that 6 months ago you noticed it went up, and wasn't concerned, but I would like to know since my father was diagnosed with PC at age 77.
Did another blood draw and PSA came back at 4.3 and free PSA came back at 16.5. Dr said she was pretty sure I am fine as the majority of higher levels are enlarged prostate, but referred me to a urologist for further testing.
Needless to say I am totally freaked out by this, and have been getting very depressed waiting a week to see the urologist. Like anybody else, I have been scouring the internet and though my numbers are just on the edge of normal, I am seeing signs like the ED pointing in the wrong direction. I needed to vent to someone today as I have nobody other than my wife to talk to, and she is getting tired of me worrying to the point of depression,
Are my numbers concerning? I feel like I have just been told my life is over

There is no need to panic at this point but your are right in your approach for being proactive and going to an urologist because your father had PC and that puts you at increased risk.
Regarding ED - about 60% of 60 year old men have ED and that is definitely not a sign of having PC, so you should try to relax.
Your PSA did not jump much either in 5 year period. There are many tests that need to be done before any conclusion can be made and your urologist will order them. Try to stay positive since there is a good chance that you do not have cancer.
PS: You can order PSA test yourself in Quest or WalkInLab if waiting makes you uncomfortable
Hi, by everything I have read and reviewed and learned your in pretty good shape as far as the #’s. Mine were really bad 14 PSA then 9 but free was 8.6. MRI Definetly told the story, gave gad BPH for many years but no ED. Now I’m in treatment for nasty cancer PSMA negative which is great so I’ll be with hormone treatment and radiation. I’m active eat good stuff go to gym I’m 71. I’ve read lots of support group stories of older ppl and years of treatment with great success. I still have my prostrate. Wont have the surgery. Don’t panic , easy to say but your still young at 58. Educate yourself and breathe if your father had it then you know more . Get the MRI.. good luck
I did some research that might help you to feel less anxious:
At 58, a PSA of 4.3 with 16.5% free PSA is in the gray zone — about a 20–25% chance of cancer, meaning it’s much more likely benign (BPH or mild inflammation). His dad’s prostate cancer at 77 adds only a small extra risk. Best move: repeat PSA in 6–8 weeks and, if it stays similar, get a multiparametric MRI before any biopsy — no reason to panic.
slow down and let the room cool off..you are in pretty good shape- just continue to monitor maybe every 4 months with PSA draw...and get with good urologist..if you notice blood or anything unusual, check in..but you dont have anything to go to panic mode about...go enjoy your life. if something does come up down the road, you will surely see it very early and it can be addressed...breathe..smile breathe
Welcome to the Forum this is an amazing group of people and we all have different experiences etc. Like most of the comments so far, take a deep breath and try to keep calm. I know it's difficult, but your PSA could be from BPH. Once you see the Urologist, go over this with them step by step what your prognosis is and your options. You might suggest to them that a PSE blood test is more accurate and get that test done. You aren't alone in this and everyone here will support you! 🙂 If you need to go to a counselor I would suggest this. Also you might want to work with your PCP to get some Anxiety drugs to help. You are younger and that works in your favor for treatment options. Some of us are living proof that Prostate Cancer when caught early is treatable.
My father also had prostate cancer and surgery at 62 and lived until 86. My PSA fluctuates from a high of 8.1 to 4.4. last one was a 7.1. In March my Pirads was 3 and a 95 ml prostate volume. A second MRI this week showed a prostate volume of 70 and a pirads 2. So key is not to panic and keep monitoring it while you live your life. But I know that is easier said than done sometimes.
If you have BPH, that means you have an enlarged prostate. That causes a higher PSA. Going on antibiotics can reduce your prostate size and your PSA. It wasn’t very high to start with.
A friend of ours had a huge prostate and a PSA of 50. He had multiple biopsies and they never found anything.
Your situation is not really a reason for concern.
Having ED is very infrequently a sign of prostate cancer. Most people have absolutely no symptoms at all besides maybe a urinary issue, for a small percentage. I hear from people all the time that have found out they have very serious prostate cancer, and had absolutely no symptoms..
As many others have said, too early to freak out.
so2315, hey, but your timing is great. Even if you do have cancer, the treatments have so greatly improved. What's more is that it would be very early discovery. 16.5 is a little concerningly low. The urologist may recommend a biopsy. Your self advocacy is a great asset. And Connect is a wonderful source. A little panic may serve you well. Best wishes.
Thanks for the replies. I have an appt scheduled next Thursday with a local urologist who is a PA with 30 years experience. I most definitely want to end up with Mayo Clinic doing any cutting or biopsy, but I am not currently a patient. What is the process to become a patient? I envision the local appointment going with a DRE and possibly a course of antibiotics with a retest after the antibiotics. If the retest comes back still elevated I want to go to Mayo for any further testing. How do you do this?
All great advice from others who have been through this.
I can only add.... sometimes it's helpful to slow down the reading.
You'll read all sorts of things & see lots of YouTube videos.
Most of it is very informative, but keep in the back of your mind that a lot of the things you read about *might* happen & have happened to others - not you.
So remember that it's all good advice, but remember that many of these things won't even happen to you.
But you've come to the right place.
