New mass found: Any opinions on recommended follow-up?

Posted by ireland123 @ireland123, Mar 12 4:46pm

Hi, so I have a question,my last mamogram showed a new spot on the right that was not there last yr. Went in had another mamogram and ultra sound. Results said possible benign well hell that isn't much comfort. So now they want me to come in every six months for the same tests to watch it and they are saying they want to watch it for 2 yrs. Personally I would much rather have it biopsied instead of going back and forth with this. I recently had colon cancer and had surgery which went fine now this. Any opinions?

Thank you everyone for responding , I did have the ultra sound right after the mammogram this is why I am frustrated , on the mammogram the tech who did it said they didn't see anything on the ultra sound they said its a mass and want me to continue to come in every six months to redo the mammogram and the ultra sound to watch it and this will go on for 2 yrs which is crazy to me, I personally want a biopsy done get it over with and find out what is there. I see my GP in May and am going to bring this up he is usually agreeable when I want something done so just have to wait till then if he gives me the oh they don't suggest it just yet I will just insist on it, I mean when you think about it better to know its something or nothing sooner then this constantly having to go back and forth.

Mine didn’t show up on mammogram either, but ultrasound showed that palpable cyst. Biopsy dx ADH. Radiologist recommended excisional biopsy because biopsy only represented a small portion of the cyst. Excisional biopsy dx DCIS and IDC. Maybe MRI would have detected it. Even though self breast exam is not recommended in the US any longer, I found my cyst through self exam. If you feel the mass is growing don’t wait for 6 months.

@triciaot I am going to ask for a biopsy in May when I see my doctor I am not one who likes to wait on things either tell me what it is or give me further testing. My GP might say wait until I throw a hissy fit lol to get what I want. It was the radiology department that gave the result and a doctor who read the ultra sound. I am not comfortable with this after just having colon cancer resection . This was not there last yr so its new which I don't like.

@ireland123 I dislike the term "hissy fit" because it suggests irrational behavior. And it's often directed toward women. You need to do everything you can to protect your health & your life. If any medical figure insults you or questions you for advocating for yourself, please tell them to "buzz" off (or whatever expletive you choose to insert!). You have agency here & you owe it to yourself to use it!

@jlwilcox
Get a ultrasound, and then biopsy if you ask your doctor that is giving you the ultrasound they will tell you what it is or is not?? Early detection is everything!! Friendly advise from a person that has had cancer twice.

My input to you is this…
In 2022 I had my mammogram and a manual exam by my breast surgeon.
I’ve had everything that imaginable happened to me with surgeries in my breast that were non-cancer related, in the last 25 years.

In February 2023, I found a lump in my upper outside quadrant of my right breast.
I said how could that be? I just had a mammogram in December 2022.

My breast doctor wasted no time in calling me in for a biopsy and an ultrasound. I concur with you. I think they need to air on the side of caution and bring you in for the biopsy and ultrasound, that is because I’ve had a similar experience and they wanted to be absolutely sure.

I relocated to Connecticut after living in Massachusetts and having all of my doctors and surgeons in place.

After having my MRI a week and a half ago, it came back with a new nodule found in the inner upper quadrant of my right breast.
That’s pretty close to where my other lump was found, which was biopsied, diagnosed as a fat necrosis and removed.

Now I’m dealing with going back for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound.

These are new radiologist and doctors, and they said that according to my former images that the oval masses I had, we’re all consistent every year, and that was my normal however, this was newly found, and although it could very well be an intermammory. node, or mass and is small.
They are bringing me in for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. My own intuition, tells me that anything of concern needs to be biopsy and further investigated.

I don’t blame you. I don’t like their comment about it’s going to be watched.
I think for me, I would definitely ask them to please biopsy it. Look at it on a diagnostic ultrasound, to confirm any possible suspicion of anything becoming anything.
I’m only going by my own personal experience.

It depends on your breast history. I have very dense breast tissue and I have a gene pool that puts me at higher risk.
I always like to say, I trust my doctors, and I certainly did for the 16 years I lived in Massachusetts. They never steered me wrong.
All I know is they did a biopsy and an ultrasound on me after there was something that could’ve been suspicious, and they did it right away just like they’re doing now with me.

I think it’s a matter of how you feel inside and if you want to feel more confident, and not be worried, if they refuse to do a biopsy. I personally would seek a second opinion.

I’m just telling you what I would do
I hope this helps.
This is not in any way to make you feel more concerned or worried, I’m strictly going by my own personal opinion.

I hope this helps. I’m just being straightforward and honest prayers and hugs to you.

@ireland123 yes, thanks, I understand what it means. Advocating for yourself is a positive thing. It takes strength & courage. It's admirable & should be celebrated.
