Hello! I was diagnosed around the same age, but have only had PMR for about 3 years. It took everyone awhile to figure out what was going on…maybe 6 months.
The trouble with doctors declaring that PMR does not occur in people under 50 is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. Since the belief is that it doesn't occur in people under 50, doctors are instructed to diagnose something else, just because of the person's age. Then when research on the occurrence of PMR is done, it appears that nobody under 50 gets PMR, because there are so few diagnoses of people under 50 getting it. So the likely fiction is reinforced.
How does one manage no weight gain while on prednisone?
I am on 5 mg and tapering down from 15.
I do not want any weight gain. Is it possible to avoid?
Systemic inflammation has many causes and is often due to autoimmune
diseases of all types. Genetics play a role and so does environment.
My PMR led to the diagnosis of arthritis that had been manifesting for
several years before and had great relief from months of prednisone.
I was diagnosed 14 months ago today, at 52. I had the symptoms but only for about 6 weeks before a correct diagnosis. I thought it was just a "getting older" and "not exercising enough" symptoms but they got worse and luckily I was able to get with a rheumatologist as they were getting unbearable.
I fought with this pain since I was probably 35ish - it came and went over the years, but then last Dec I couldn't even move - it took me to change family dr to get answers -
I have struggled with symptoms since around 35, It came and went over the years - finally couldn't move last Dec - it took me to get a second opinion and he pushed to get results- I should of been diagnosed years ago. Now 51 I have fought with it too long - I am exhausted-
PMR was diagnosed when I was 52 years old but it started when I was 51. There was some confusion about my diagnosis because I was diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis with uveitis at the age of 32. The confusion according to my GP at the time was because I was " like a crazy person that wanted prednisone." He apologized after PMR was diagnosed by a rheumatologist and said he thought it was PMR when he first met me. That was why he prescribed prednisone in the first place.
The problem was a rheumatologist initially said it was a flare of inflammatory arthritis. I don't blame anyone because I had a 20 year history of inflammatory arthritis and uveitis. My presentation was very complicated until a rheumatologist requested that I stop taking prednisone and come back to see her. I was only able to stop taking prednisone for two days before my next visit a week later. There were three rheumatologists at that visit and they all agreed that I had PMR.
I asked what happened to inflammatory arthritis. A rheumatologist said I still had inflammatory arthritis. Then she said it was "unfortunate" but now I had PMR in addition to inflammatory arthritis. She said once you have one autoimmune disorder it increases the risk of having another autoimmune disorder.
I have multiple autoimmune disorders. I took prednisone for 12 years to treat PMR. My rheumatologist referred to it as "systemic inflammation." I finally got off prednisone when a biologic was tried that targeted PMR. Technically, I still have PMR but the biologic controls it far better than prednisone ever did.
I have the same question... I am already overweight 🙁 and do not want to gain any more or have facial changes . Is it possible?
Yes it's possible not to gain weight on prednisone, but it takes determination and changing what you eat.
