Neuropathic Itch and Burn... can someone help?
Hi All, I have this neuropathic itching and burning skin sensations all over my body. It started with mainly burning on chest and face and some itching. Slowly it started spreading and the itching just got worse. I have tried all the main medications, amytrip, duloxetine, oxcarba, gabapentin, LDN.. none of them work or make things worse. Pregabalin did help a bit and I still take it. I am now starting to try muscle relaxants etc for any relief. Sedating anti histamines help a bit sometimes, but not fully. Could anyone give me advice on any other supplements or meds that could stop these intense itching and burning sensations? I don't have any nerve damage, so either my nerves are just hyper excitable or I have a nerve based version of fibromyalgia. Any help would be seriously appreciated, it has impacted my life massively. Thank you x

Hello @tammicecile87, Welcome to Connect. You mentioned you think your nerves might just be hyper excitable which remined me of another discussion where @josh701 mentioned similar symptoms - Post viral syndrome peripheral nerve hyperexcitability: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/post-viral-syndrome-peripheral-nerve-hyperexcitability/.
You mentioned you don't have any nerve damage. Have you had any testing for neuropathy?

1 Reaction@johnbishop Hi John, thanks so much for your response. Yes I have had testing for neuropathy, all seem normal. Just my pain pathways are hyper excitable. So the conclusion is it's either a pain signal issue, where the brain and spine are amplifying things... or my nerves are just firing too easily. No one knows and all meds seem to make things worse or not help?

Hello. I’m working on a similar issue with my neuropathy from nerve damage. I too have tried a variety of treatments-to no relief. The topical relief lasts only an hour or two. I’m going to meet with my doc today and discuss each drug I’m taking to see if this might be caused due to interactions between the drugs. Also looking at a reaction from my chronic kidney disease - stage 3. Will post here again if I have any news to share. Good luck to you.

1 ReactionAccupuncture has helped me the most. Does not take it away but reduced the burning sensation a lot. I now go every 2 weeks to keep everything manageable.

1 Reaction@amanancy ah thank you for replying. Acupuncture actually flares things for me… it’s so odd. I wish it helped though x
I am not sure if this will help or not , but I would ask your doctor for a compound pharmacy cream. Even if there is not a local pharmacy, compound pharmacies will normally ship.
Your doctor could order you a cream tailored to your needs.
@tammicecile87 So sorry to hear that. I am also going to try ultra sound at the end of the month. I'll keep everyone posted.

2 Reactions@maggieaz ah as it's all over, it's hard to have something all over me all the time... if it was local it would be easier. But thank you x
I use gabapentin for pain and cramping. I use cortisone 10 cream from Amazon for itching. Hope this helps. The itching drives me crazy. I also have discoid lupus. Didn’t have itching problems until a couple of months ago. Have had lupus and neuropathy for years but never itched til lately.
