Nervous about Reversal Surgery

Posted by robbielowery @robbielowery, Jul 10 8:29am

Hello. I am nervous about the reversal Surgery that is coming soon. I had a NG tube for a few days while in the Hospital due to swelling in small intestine after having Sigmoid Colon removed and "Bag" attached to my abdomen. I am scared that a similar thing will happen this time as well.
Please, can anyone help me?

I'm assuming you received nutrition via the NG (naso-gastric?) tube. I had a hemi-colectomy because of a volvulus (not cancer) and I received nutrition via a central line. When I was reconnected 6 months later, I wasn't allow to eat anything (but I could drink water) until I had a bowel movement, but I didn't receive nutrition by any kind of tube or line. Instead I just got hungrier and hungrier!
I hope this answers your concern. I was very, very glad to be reconnected, though it took a while for my colon to settle down.

I have a colostomy sense 4/2017 and I sure understand you fear, or concern. I have had many, many NG (nasal gastric tubes) from many many bowel obstructions over a 30 year time frame. Finally they gave me the colostomy and I have only had one blockage in all this time. I feel very blessed to have this colostomy because I a not always in the hospital. I hate the NG tube but it is always very necessary for me to have it to drain the build up of gas and debris in my stomach from the blockage. I assume that is what your NG tube was for, Not for feeding? I know the NG tubes are very uncomfortable but very necessary to keep from your stomach blowing up with the gas from the decomposing food in your stomach.
Good luck with your reversal. For me I have opted to not have a reversal because I am so afraid of going back to the all the blockages that I had and this is so much easier to handle for me.
