Needed: Audiologist who works with Bimodal patients.

If you are bimodal (HA worn on one ear & CI worn on the other), have you found an audiologist who works with both HA & CI fittings?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Hearing Loss Support Group.

Your cochlear implant center should be able to do that for you. If you don't live in that geographical area, the CI center should be able to suggest a provider.

I am bimodal myself and had to travel 150 miles round trip for support. As CIs have become more common, a few audiologists in my area have been trained to work with bimodal users.

Audiologists with AuD behind their name have doctorate level degrees. That education should include training in this area. Especially now that CIs have become more common.

I am in central NC, and, unfortunately, 2 hospital audiologists don't know how to set the 2 devices to work together. In both cases, for the CI, it was a matter of " is this tone louder than that tone" (guesswork, at best), then setting the hearing aid to the NAL prescribed in situ fitting. So the aid is not compensating for the limitations of the CI, especially in louder situations, like live music. The two devices combined are not tested in office for real world sound situations.

For instance - a pure tone should be played to test for L/R balance at the traditional Aid gain adjustment points. This is pretty tedious, and lengthy, taxing both the audiologist and the patient, especially during the time the patient is getting used to the CI. A moving target..
