Need support re: my SIBO treatment

Posted by skim3737 @skim3737, Nov 2, 2023

Hello. I'm starting Xifaxan and neomycin on Monday for my methane SIBO and I'm really, really nervous. Any tips or advice? TIA!

Thank you so much for your response. That's a lot of really helpful info. You mentioned your stomach being messed up for 4 weeks. Were you on neomycin for 4 weeks? And did you take it with Xifaxan/rifaximin?

I was on neomycin for 28 days. I did not take it concurrently with rifaximin, but I have taken that one in the past and neomycin was worse. That said, conventional antibiotics like doxy and cipro are worse than either neomycin or rifaximin.

That said, and as respectfully as possible, you have gotten the same answer a half dozen times, any specific context about your specific condition, age, or constitution that makes you so neurotic? If you actually have SIBO, Western medicine has no better solution than neo + rif, I hop you have a doctor you trust not to prescribe you something that would turn you blue, punch your ticket and take the ride.

Yes, I have more reasons for my neurosis than I can explain but the short of it is that I worked in healthcare for 17 years and don't always trust doctors, I was extensively over treated for stage 1 cervical cancer in 1998 and was subjected to 6 weeks of radiation that I didn't need. As a result my entire digestive system was fried. I've had more bowel obstructions than I can count and have had 2 intestinal resection surgeries and one surgery to clip scar tissue. I currently have at least one stricture in my small intestines along with multiple dilated loops. This SIBO treatment was actually my request because since my body was destroyed by a gynaecological oncologist 25 years ago, I have learned to research and advocate for my health. I am 5'5" and weigh just 82 pounds at this point. I was also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder at Mayo Clinic more than 15 years ago. Lots of causes for my cautious approach. My biggest goal in posting this was to get an idea of what others experienced while on this regimen so I know what to expect. And also it's nice to get a little pep talk since I'm homebound and don't have any family or friends that check on me with any sort of regularity. Does that explain it?

Update: I'm on day 6 of the Xifaxan and neomycin and have had zero side effects, except for being extremely tired on day one and day two. Just thought I would come back and leave update for anyone else it may provide useful to in the future. 8 days to go after today.

My symptoms got much better but I will have chronic SIBO for the rest of my life because I no longer have an ileocecal valve due to small bowel resection surgery in 2003. So I take Xifaxan and neomycin once or twice a year. Just completed a second round earlier this month and my symptoms improved again.

A lot of us with SIBO have to be treated multiple times. Unless you can fix the slow motility that causes the SIBO, it will rear its ugly head in a regular basis. I use Motegrity to help inbetween antibiotic regimens but I’m not sure it really works for me. I’m on Xifaxan and Pepto-Bismol Day 12 for Hydrogen Sulfide overload and have made it through the die-off without too much trouble. I just stayed close to the bathroom. 😞 I’m looking forward to less pain and constipation!

I sure hope that you're able to find the cause of your slow motility. I have loads of adhesions in my gut from radiation treatment and multiple bowel surgeries, as well as multiple newer strictures since my last surgery in 2013. SIBO symptoms started 6 months after that last surgery. Doctors will not do anymore surgeries for strictures unless it's an emergency because that causes even more scar tissue to form. I have methane dominant and am also on Motegrity plus colace 3 times a day, an herbal prokinetic and herbal laxative when needed. Prayers that you get relief from your meds! 🙏
