Neck pain while on prednisone

Posted by scortellino @scortellino, 1 day ago

I was diagnosed with PMR in Oct. 2024. Started with 20 mg Prednisone and now I am down to 10 mg. I do not have the type of pain I had with my intial PMR diagnosis. At that time I had terrible pain in my hips, knees, arms, and shoulders. Now I have pain in my neck and shoulders. My rheumatologist is thinking it is arthritius and/or pain due to bone loss from the prednisone - I am also on Omeprazole for GERD. Next step is an infusion for osteoporosis
Has anyone else experienced this type of neck pain?

I have different pain in tapering down from pred. The neck included. My rheumatologist said it’s a flair up. I’m in pain everyday but nothing like when I was first diagnosed in April 2026

I was diagnosed and started Prednisone at 22.5 mg/day in August 2025. I've tapered down to 7 mg/day currently. I usually have some slight pain in my neck and shoulders in the morning, and sometimes in my deltoids. It usually goes away after an hour and I don't take any OTC painkillers. Whenever it gets worse, I stop tapering until it lessens. Luckily I have not had a flare that goes back to my original PMR pain.

Me too - It is very frustrating not getting clear answers from rheumatologist - she said it isn't a flair up - but after researching I think it is.
Thank you for the response - take care!
