Nausea medications for chemo nausea side affects?

Posted by denise96 @denise96, 4 days ago

My husband has just had his 2nd treatment of chemo and immunotherapy. Knowing that it is fairly common to have vomiting and nausea, I was wondering what medications have helped you. He is taking compazine, but it does not seem to help that much. He does not get nauseated, he just all of a sudden rushes to the bathroom and vomits. it is more like the dry heaves. He can't keep any food down at all. He is now down to 94 pounds. He wants to eat so he can gain some weight but it is hard when you can't keep your food down. Poor guy already looks like a walking, talking skeleton. His hair has started to fall out. Last night he told me that he just feels like quitting the treatments. The doctors keep telling him he has to eat and we keep telling them that he can't keep anything down but they don't seem to get it. They just say keep taking your nausea pills. I don't know how to help him. He has boost which he doesn't drink. He drinks coffee and milk every day. Somedays he will try and eat soup but he eats very little of it. He is on remeron as one of the side affects is gaining weight. But if you can't keep it down, what good does it do? The steroids they give him during chemo made him hungry and he ate. But my daughter in law who is an oncology nurse told him that they dont like to keep cancer patients on steroids, because they start to run to the cancer side. which no one needs. Any help would be appreciated.

This is a sticky situation and I can't imagine how awful he must feel. If he can keep the coffee down, I wonder if using a vanilla flavored protein shake in stead of milk will get a couple extra calorie him.

Do keep a written list of the foods he does eat to show the doctor. Maybe that would help them better understand what the issue is. My oncologist gave me Zofran that melts under my tongue and it's fast acting. Ask your doctor if something like that could be taken to prevent the nausea from hitting while eating.

Thank you for your concern. I will definitely be calling the doctor tomorrow. They should have a dietian or nutritionist that can give us suggestions. Have a good day.

My husband was ok, but was given rx for Compro and Zofran. There’s a Compro under the tongue pill that dissolves in minutes, relief within 15 mins.

Thanks for replying. His doctor did give him zofran and Zyprexa I picked them up yesterday. The compazine did not seem to work for him. HOpefully these new pills will work. The thing that makes me upset, is that he will not drink any water. I offered to make him peppermint tea with honey but he said no. Any of the things I have read about helping nausea he refuses to do. I know he has to be dehydrated. But when he throws up, it is mostly pleghm. Of course, he does not have much in his stomach. He did try ginger ale but he threw up after drinking it. I told him to sip it. Whether or not he did, I don't know. He makes things hard for himself and me.
