My son was diagnosed with Crohn's disease

Good day! My son was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when he was 17. He is now 22. He was hospitalized in June and had an abscess drained. The wound still hasn't healed. The discharge doesn't stop. My son has been taking only salofalk for the last two years. A consultation with gastroenterologists was also held and biotherapy with Adalimumab was prescribed. But surgeons won't allow biotherapy until the wound heals. Can you tell me what to do in this case? And is it possible to carry out biotherapy with an open wound after an abscess? Also, can you tell me what diet should be followed for Crohn's disease?

Welcome to Connect @alesya, So sorry to hear that your son is struggling with Crohn's and now has a wound that's not healing preventing the biotherapy treatment. Care for wounds that are not healing is really important.
The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation has some good information on diet for Crohn's here - https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/patientsandcaregivers/diet-and-nutrition/what-should-i-eat.

Has your son's doctor provided any special instructions/treatment to help with the wound healing?

Good day dear Doctor!

Thank you very much for your recommendations on diet for Crohn's disease! Unfortunately, there are no such detailed recommendations in Belarus.

The surgeon did not give my son any specific recommendations on wound healing. He believes that healing should occur individually. You just need to wait. My son treats the wound with chlorhexidine daily and changes sterile gauze dressings. Maybe you can advise on ways to heal a wound after an abscess?

Best regards,
Alesya S

Hello Alesya, I'm not a doctor but just a patient like other members here on Mayo Clinic Connect. Members here on Connect can share their personal experience with treatments but are not able to provide treatment advice. It sounds like your son is doing what he can to keep the wound clean and help the natural healing. Does the wound look or feel like it's getting better?

Thank you for your reply! It is very nice that you are interested in my son's problem and answering questions! This is very important for me and for my son. The wound is healing, but very slowly. Doctors say that the wound prevents the healing of an exacerbation of Crohn's disease, until the wound heals - biotherapy with the drug Adalimumab cannot be carried out. Such a vicious circle ...

I'll say it again for emphasis, have him look up and read about Low Dose Naltrexone. Then ask one of his docs to prescribe it. It does not require an opiate certification. It will at least help his immune system. The only side effects I suffered were multicolored dream which miss now I have been on it awhile.

Unfortunately, naltrexone is not sold in Belarus. Maybe you know its analogue? Also, my son has now started taking 2 mg. Medrol. Maybe it has the same effect. Do you know?

Sorry for the delay, having computer problems. Medrol is methlprednisalone which is a steroid. 2mg isn't a very high dose, probably because he has an infection and the doc doen't want to interrupt the healing. You might need to call a pharmacy in another country to get LDN if you can a local doc to work with you.
