My legs collapsing underneath me without warning since I’ve been on ga
Eight years ago I moved back to Wisconsin and during that time I noticed my hands shaking and enrolled at my old family hospital
I was prescribed Propaninal and within months it eliminated most of my hand shaking
About a year or so later I was in the same hospital network and had an emergency visit where they crated my chest and found a minor anuryism on my aorta
At that time my doctor stopped the propaninol and put me on gabapentin for my tremors
It took over a year to start helping with the ET’s in my hands
At about same time my back was aching terribly and saw orthopedic team at same hospital and they said gabapentin would relieve pain and increased dosage
At that time my legs would give out under me
Now my legs can’t navigate going down stairs without my collapsing of which I’ve done now over 6 times in last year
I walk 3-6 miles a day but with no confidence my legs will hold me up
I’m 72 snd 150lbs staying in very good shape
Until gabapentin
My legs collapsing underneath is increasing and it’s really affecting my life style
The propaninol worked but doctor switched me to gabapentin of which has crippled me in doing steps
And suggestions

I would suggest that you get your hips checked out. I have had idiopathic PN for several years. Last year, April 2024, my R leg started giving out under me. One day it did so repeatedly. The next morning I went to the orthopedic Urgent Care clinic. X-rays showed the hip joint was arthritic. An MRI showed that the bursa was not contributing to the pain. As soon as I could get on the schedule, I had a hip replacement. The new hip does not go out from under me, and the pain I was attributing to my lower back or sacroilliac joint turned out to be removed by a hip replacement - the pain was coming from the hip. Good luck as you search for the cause of your problem.
My doctors will not let me take gabapentin.
How about pregabalin?
@woody52
Have you seen a neurologist and orthopedic spine specialist? Have you had MRI of your cervical and lumbar spine plus EMG/nerve conduction studies of your upper and lower limbs? Medication alone does not sound like it would help your symptoms.
Have you been sent to physical therapy?
Note taken but my first stop two months ago was … my hip
My Orthopod took images and his response was at 72, I have the hips, with joints, of a 50 yr old and are in great condition
My interest in posting was to attempt hearing others feedback dealing with gabapentin and issues to weakening or failing legs
I’m not looking to have others or myself prescribing meds or surgeries
Please stay focused on providing feedback with after using gabapentin any leg issues of having them collapsing without warning
Especially when degressing stairs
Thanks to all in advance
Hello...I am 75, weigh 128 lbs. Since having long COVID, my legs, in particular have really been affected. They are heavy feeling, and I difficulty walking. Also going up and down stairs. I have to lift my right leg to get in the car. It depresses me. I recently saw a long COVID doctor, who perscribed Gabapentin as well as a compounded medication. I will be starting rehab very soon to address the issues with my legs. I do know that my legs seem a bit better and I am sleeping much better which has helped with my energy levels during the day. I totally undertand how you feel. I wish you better days ahead.
@bestseller2025 it sounds to me like you need to let your Dr know about the falling since on gabapentin. We have to be our own advocate in this world. Best of luck.
Just a wild comment about what worked for me. I have muscular dystrophy and instead of going the normal drug-for-pain route, I used over-the-counter turmeric. I now never have to take any other pain meds, including Aleve and ibuprofen. Turmeric took care of it all for me.
I am not falling yet....
