My Diary, day of surgery to post-op visit
9/16/2024
Had the surgery. Lasted 5 hours. Went into the OR at 2:30, out at 8.
I did get to tell my going under dad joke "Hey, anybody want anything while I'm out?" 🙂
Woke up at midnight!
Only acetaminophen for pain 325mg every 6 hours
The first time I got up to walk I had uncontrollable shaking, I was so cold.
9/17/2024
Up most of the night because my back really hurt.
The feeling that I really, really have to urinate and defecate is almost overwhelming. Sitting on the toilet is no relief.
No solid foods until, as the Doctor said, "I fart."
Came home at 11 am
I slept for about 2 hours nin a recliner
Emptied catheter twice

You can take 2 500mg acetaminophen pills every 2 hours for a little more relief. I have done it for years. Doctor approved. They sell 500mg pills, coated or uncoated.
Hope you have everything come around smoothly, soon. Maybe miralax to relieve your discomfort.
Recovery is normally quick from the surgery.
This is awesome. Thankyou. Keep them coming. Detailed accounts like this are great. I have mine next Tuesday, so knowing what I'm likely to feel day by day is extremely helpful. I've heard awful things about the needing-to-pee feelings & pain when the catheter's in. How do you push through that initially? Lots of drugs?
I can imagine the cold/shaking thing. That's probably me.
Not a lot of pain at all. Surprising mild, until you cough or sneeze. 🙂
No drugs at all except Tylenol. I think I'm going to up the dose to 2 extra strength to alleviate some of the aches.
The worst pain last night was in my back. I think it's from the position they have you lying in during the procedure. You are on this small "sticky" pad, as they called it, and it goes from your shoulders to just above your butt. The lower back is where it hurts. I am going to sleep in the recliner tonight.
I hope it's not that sticky - and if it is, hopefully I'm dressed. Otherwise I'll be getting a free back wax. Lower back always hurts, so no change there.
LOLOL. It was a pink foam type material and really hard to "scootch" your butt down like they were asking me to do. 🙂
Congrats on making through your first post surgery day. As stated by others, don’t hesitate to treat pain (because you need the sleep) and if needed later, medication to get the your bowels working again. Don’t be surprised if some temporary discomfort/pain due to the gas used in your surgery. Walking as much as you can to get the circulation going and hydrating to help surgical healing are also key.
OK "chipe", you started it with your 'dad joke' and report on catheter. My true story:
A local radio DJ, Dick Purtan, was famous for his listener Put On's. Then got one on him.
Lady calls in wanting to request a song in honor of her urologist. Said he was great and gave her a "pacemaker for her bladder" (like our AMS devices?). Said it was really helpful except when near a microwave or an old airplane flying low overhead. [by now the whole radio station was breaking up]. The song she wanted was Elton John's, "I'll Never Pass This Way Again".
Good luck brother and hope you'll 'pass this way again' and everything else to be free of PC effects.
I walked and went a little further each day. It certainly helped me recover!
I read that you’re facing surgery next week. I have written up all my notes of my experience, which after talking to other men that also had prostatectomies, they shared that they also had the same experiences. I’ve attached that write up as a PDF. I hope it helps you on your journey.

I read your post and it reminded me of what I went through in January. I wrote up a summary of all my notes of what I went through and what you can reasonably expect. I’ve attached them as a PDF. I hope it helps you on your journey.
