My 54 year old daughter had a large cervical
Polyp removed yesterday. She is bleeding today. Is this normal? Dr not in on Fridays. Also what chance can this be benign. She has braca 1 and hpv. I am ill with Waldenstroms and we are very stressed fright now thanks in advance.

I am an emergency operator, when our doctors clinics are closed or not in, they usually assign a nurse, NP, or PA if the patient is having questions post surgery. Have you tried the nurse in office?

@zeedee1 It's understandable to have concerns after your daughter's procedure. What she underwent is called a cervical polypectomy; cramping and bleeding for up to a few days afterward is not unusual due to the blood vessels that were cut and nerve endings irritated in the area. Upon discharge, your daughter should have been given instructions that detailed some of these things to expect and under what circumstances to contact the doctor or if she had any concerns, even after hours. The important thing is not to place anything in the vagina - such as tampons - to try to quell the bleeding - as you wouldn't want to introduce any possible source of infection. This is generally advised for two weeks or so following the procedure but always check with the doctor for specific instructions.

Cervical polyps are not uncommon but those that tend to grow are recommended to be removed, both for comfort of the individual as well as evaluation. It's really only through that detailed evaluation in pathological exam that the polyp can be confirmed to be benign. The waiting period can be hard as it can take up to 3 weeks to get results; sometimes there are preliminary reports but sometimes doctors prefer to wait until the report is finalized before discussing the results. This is a normal waiting period so in the event it does take this long, try not to assume it's because there is a problem as many of us tend to jump to that conclusion.

Hope the information you received has helped. Has the bleeding improved or was your daughter able to get in touch with the doctor?

She was not able to get hold of the doctor. The bleeding seems to come and go. It doesn’t appear to be extremely heady.‘I have urged her to not lift anything and stay off her feet to no avail. Just nervous that the Dr saw it last year and didn’t remover
It and it did grow so she removed
it by twisting it off? My daughter does not handle pain or adversity well. Never has so this all makes it more
Difficult.
I am stressed about the biopsy and it seems to be effecting my cancer symptoms as well. Thanks for getting back time.

@zeedee: No worries, we're all ramblin' folk here at one time or another! It seems to me you've explained the situation concisely.

I cannot speak to exactly how your daughter's procedure was done, but when I worked in a physician's office, it wasn't unusual to perform a cervical polypectomy in a the office using something called a LEEP device that made use of cautery (heated) type of instrument to essentially burn the polyp off. That sounds worse than it is as usually just local anesthetic is enough to dull the area, sometimes in conjunction with medication to provide relaxation beforehand. Because polyps are a fairly common finding, many are simply observed and not removed until they've been noted to have grown. Has your daughter inquired if this was the reason in her case? The extent of the bleeding you're describing is what would be expected. Light activity and lifting should be fine - but hopefully some instructions in this regard had been provided by the office or clinic. Most offices have answering services for after-hour calls, but they may be triaged according to emergency. My motto always is, "When in doubt, check it out" - so if you're unsure, definitely ask the doctor.

For your own exacerbated symptoms, what do you attribute this to? For ongoing concerns regarding your daughter's post-op course or her activity level, are you able to call the office tomorrow during regular hours? It may put you more at ease.

Thank you Susan. We will call the office in the morning. Regarding my symptoms, really bad diarrhea. Not sure if it’s my infusions or new reaction to Brukinsa. Or just plain old nerves😗

@zeedee1 It's very possible your GI symptoms are due to the Brukinsa as diarrhea is one of the more common side effects. You want to be sure you don't become dehydrated, so along with your daughter's doctor, can you add your own doctor's office to that list today to be sure you're staying on top of this?
