My 85 yo lady I just started caring for is/has been prone to UTIs. Granddaughters say cranberry juice/pills do nothing to lessen the amount of times she has them. She currently has one, she is on antibiotic for it. What can we do? Natural, medical? Yes I know about increasing fluid, changing often...please, please help. Please.

Thank you for being a caregiver. I’m also prone to UTI’s. I also agree with cranberry juice and good hydration. Post toilet hygiene is also important; but it sounds like you already know that. There are two other things that have been helpful for me. One is getting probiotics such as real yogurt and Kefir. This is especially important when antibiotics are on board. It helps replace the good bacteria that gets wiped out by antibiotics. The other is old school soaking in a sits bath with vinegar added. (Or even older school vinegar douche.) A very old doctor recommended that to me after I had a hysterectomy and was plagued with UTI’s. It might even be worth asking the medical people about yeast infection remedies. The reproductive and elimination parts are all in such close proximity that one problem can easily morph to others. As I’m writing this more ideas are coming to me. Loose fitting cotton undies and PJ’s are helpful to let the area breathe. Some synthetic fabrics cause irritation. Speaking of breathing, she could sleep commando on top of bed pads if incontinence is a problem. Avoid hygiene products with dyes or fragrances (powders & lotions). Simple talc, baby powder, baby oil are all good products. Again, thanks for caring!

I have been having UTI’S for many years now; I had over 9 this year alone. I have tried most medicines but a now allergic to most or several side effects. I have had 10 kidney stones that seem to go along with the UTI’S. I now take 2 melted twice a day! This is the longest I have been without one!

Everyone is different, but a consistent daily cranberry pill of 500 mg is reported by all my friends and myself to help ward off UTIs. Cranberry juice doesn’t work as well, imo. My mom took it sporadically and then claimed it didn’t work.

Also, I’d check with her primary about Estradiol cream. It’s applied locally to vaginal area and helps with everything in that area. You and daughter can research it.

Some seniors take a daily maintenance antibiotic, but I have no input on that.

Best wishes with helping that situation.

I use cranberry pills twice a day and do kegel exercises every day. For years. No problems

TRY THIS COMBO FOR UTI'S:

Yes to EstradIol cream, or Vaginal suppositories of same, and water. I find no change with any amount of cranberry, but suggest you continue that. BUT I do have a new protocol and it has worked for me from inception 10 months ago.

Got the idea from this blog over a year ago, and then I'd had a UTI which gave no symptoms at all, and landed me in hospital with SEPSIS for 9 days, and IV antib's for another 6 days. Got a new urologist to give it a try which he did after going through the usual antib's on another 3 infections.

I now take 2000 mg of D-Mannose a day, one with lots of water before eating of having coffee in a.m. Then the other mid afternoon. It is a safe sugar that coats the bladder against the bacteria. Then I also take Methenamine twice a day, after some food if needed. It's between an antibiotic and a sanitizer against the bacteria. I cut back on coffee, only one diet coke per day, a glass of wine few times a year, no lattes. All these I drink only after first drinking half a glass of water. All combined, I am UTI free for 10 months. I'll be 80 next birthday, my problems began seriously only after turning 77.

I also test with medical grade strips every two weeks or so since the one that lead to sepsis and nearly killed me gave me NO symptoms. Keep that in mind. I order Siemen's strips on Amazon,

Good luck to all, especially those who are older with caretakers. It's often difficult to find an MD who will know and try new protocols in any area of health. Get a young one and they will be more familiar with it.
