Muscle cramping severe
Help with preventing severe muscle cramps. They’re debilitating and frightening to have it take over the body for 5 minutes when it happens. Taking supplements of magnesium, potassium, calcium plus salt to prevent.

Interested in hearing from others suffering severe nerve/muscle (arms, hands and legs) spasms related to Cervical Radiculopathy. Diagnosed with sero-positive RA, 37 years on now and also have osteoporosis in neck and hips. Nothing (medicine, PT, yoga) gives relief from random spasms that last 5-10 minutes. Just have to let them have their way until they peak then resolve. Never know when it will happen which makes driving a challenge as well as daily activities when spasms take over. So far, haven't found anyone on Mayo Clinic Connect that suffers from radiculopathy vs PAD/Peripheral Neuropathy--they are not initiated by the same precursors.
@rocky98502 Welcome to Connect. I am a spine patient, but I don't have RA. Just a thought, since I know that magnesium helps with muscle spasms, and soaking in an Epsom salt bath may help. Most of us are deficient in magnesium and you will absorb it through your skin doing this. You can buy Epsom salts at a grocery store pharmacy section, and put a couple cups in for a warm water soak for 20 minutes. It's very relaxing too!

1 ReactionHello Jennifer and thank you for your thoughtful response. I was on magnesium supplement (at a very high dose) for about 12 years after being recommended by one of my rheumatologists. My new rheumatologist said that the calcium and magnesium dosages were not intended for perpetual use and recommended discontinuing. In any case, the radiculopathy, essentially another name for "pinched nerve" condition, was not impacted in either direction. I am basically just curious if others on Mayo Clinic Connect in the subgroup Bones & Muscles, etc. have been diagnosed with (cervical) radiculopathy....looking for a sub-community that may share some of the issues of living with it.
Again, thank you very much. It was nice to see a response, especially as a new MCC member.

1 Reaction@rocky98502 Radiculopy is pinching of nerves that originate from the spine. There are many members describing this condition with discussions in the Spine Health group, and you’re welcome to join them. Another way to find discussions about radiculopathy is to use the search field at the top of the screen and you’ll get a list of conversations about it and those may be scattered in different groups, but most would be in the Spine Group.

1 ReactionJust so you know, I did search under radiculopathy but the only convos returned were in the Bones/Muscle group. But thanks for the tip about the Spine Health group; very helpful.

1 ReactionIn my entire life I have experienced cramps so many times but in 2024 I had a major cramp in my left thigh, which made me feel the exact same way... extreme pain, numbness and feeling like my muscles are tangling between. extreme pain that made me literally fainted i was so worried for couple of days, there was pain for many days after this event I was very conscious on my water intake.
in 2025 beginning January i had same experience again. This time I gone to orthopaedics did blood n urin test twice to understand the reason behind it but no major reason found out (uric acid was lil high) I am now just pray every night that I should not have that same experience again, because it is almost dying situation to experience that extreme pain.
what I am trying now is having salt and take stretching my leg at night and some muscle relaxant I hope we all get well soon

1 ReactionI have been getting some relief from Theraworx. I have the foam, the spray and the roll on. I carry the roll on everywhere as my hands cramp up as well. My U card covers it at Walmart. I pay nothing.
Take sublingual vitamin B12
Do you take statin? I went off mine for severe cramping. I am a lot better .
