Dealing with multiple GI issues

Posted by oliveoyl123 @oliveoyl123, Feb 7, 2024

I have been adding new diagnoses to my already numerous this past six months. My former gi dr just thru meds at me mostly. So about 11 years ago I got diagnosed with redundant colon and IBS-c (which sometimes I think is a catch-all for who knows what's wrong with you LOL) when I started following the low FODMAP diet loosely (onions and garlic are out for sure.) Two years later I had severe lower chest pain and went to ER, where I eventually diagnosed with EOE, gastritis, hiatal hernia. Put on prilosec then and still on them, top dose now. Had my colonoscopy 9 years after the first as I was having issues again and got sent to specialist colon dr as I have flat large precanerous polyps that took 3 more colonoscopies (4 in 20 months), and the last two were two day preps with two gallons prep that I could only get 1 1/4 down both times. On a yearly schedule now, sigh. I was having issues with swallowing again this past June and had another endoscopy where gi dr broke a Schatzki ring at the bottom, and showed an erosive esophagus, no EOE. I also saw a couple of ENTs shortly after as I was having vocal cord issues (from long Covid in the spring), and turns out I have LPR, and acid reflux is hitting my vocal cords. I switched to a larger practice who did three tests - ph impendence (119 weakly acidic events in 24 hours, some up to my vocal cords, on meds), esophageal motility which showed gastroparesis, and manometry which showed inefficient esophageal motility. I was too complex for them so I am being referred to a university center. I also met with a dietician who helped me figure out how to deal with these conflicting diagnoses! I am eating very little solids, granola in am (to keep me not constipated but gives me heart burn) midmorning a homemade muffin or similar, soup which I just stopped pureeing for lunch, Owyn protein drink for mid afternoon, and a smoothie for dinner. Avoiding as much acid foods and drinks as possible, only drinking alkaline water. Just wondering if anyone else has similar multiple issues. And what anyone has found that works! I am on a new med for the motility issue, bethanechol which hasn't helped much yet (bloating still bad.) And I have lost almost 30 pounds in 4 months, needed to but not sure when it will stop.

Forgot to mention GERD as diagnosis 9 years ago. And IBS was mixed not C.

So sorry you’re going through all of this! Wow. I have had a few similar issues. Mostly with pain in chest fit over a year and swallowing. Losing weight. A lot of same tests as you. But I also had cta w contrast of my stomach and special ultrasound from a vascular surgeon. Was diagnosed with MALS! So grateful to have a diagnosis. Are they doing any surgeries for you? Procedures? To enable to to eat more food etc? Wishing you good health! And hang in there. There’s so many drs out there to help you. 😊

are you taking any vitamin/mineral supplements? I basically quit eating much (collitis-diverticulosis and cancer) and got anemia and other deficiencies. How are you getting your nutrition?

Yes, I take supplements, floradix for iron, multivitamin, fish oil, b12 under tongue, vit d spray, probiotics, and couple other supplements. I see my new primary next week and plan to ask for lab work for some of these.

I am waiting to get an appointment with Geisinger. My current gi practice told me there is surgery to rebuild my lower sphincter of my esophagus and maybe fix my hiatal hernia but not sure what the university center will do yet.

Thank you and will do! Been advocating for my family's health and definitely my own for some time now. I am just feeling a little lonely in having so many things going on and no close support person.

Just want to hear from other adults that have had GI issues. I am at Mayo Rochester for my own issues that are very overwhelming. I have a genetic condition that affects my liver & lungs but unfortunately affects a lot in the body: pancreas, inflammation, sinuses, GI, allergies. I have given the gene to my daughter and she is suffering miserably from GI symptoms (liver has not been tested). Her stomach hurts on the daily especially after every meal. She is headed off to college to play a college sport and I’m feeling like I need to get her fixed fast. She had an appt with a GI doctor at home & it got all screwed up to where they can’t get her in before college. She went through tests (through her primary….sent to imaging) to watch food through move her system and it is not her gallbladder. Everything looked “normal”. She has allergies (not food) and is not celiac. No allergy to dairy although major problems with formula as a baby. Her college is in Maine and I am scared to get her started at Mayo Clinic so far away but we are desperate. Just curious if anyone has experienced anything similar and had advice.

Okay, It is just pain then? No poop issues? Gas issues? Others can weigh in on pain (not my issue). I have only a few recommendations:

1. Slippery Elm "tea" (inner bark) supports the mucosa of the gut. Pain might = inflammation. I take 1/2 teaspoon in hot water in the morning, first thing, but Google what might be best for her.

2. Stomach massage, to move stool and gas along. See the UK's NHS routine here: https://www.torbayandsouthdevon.nhs.uk/uploads/25773.pdf.

3. Bitter gourd. Sold at some Asian markets, either fresh or frozen. It helps me. There is a study posted to the NIH website. Google "NIH and bitter gourd." I put some in multi-veggie soups. It is definitely bitter, but I it makes a difference and I eat it often for a happy belly. If it is magical for her also, see what you can do. Maybe freeze-dry it for college and she can add it to canned soups.

4. If this genetic condition is amplified by stress, consider Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the hypnosis route. All you do is listen to a recorded reading daily (the therapist creates a different one at the weekly session, the other days, its recording is your "homework"). Seven weeks and you are free; you can then induce the same gut benefits on your own, wherever you are, and listen to a recording again for a reboot. GI Psychology in Burke, VA. Virtual sessions. My therapist was Tina. I love that it is short course and then independence and success.

Good luck -- I am sure others will have some useful medication and other ideas.

Try eating smaller bland meals with low acid items. Don’t drink carbonated beverages. Only water and unsweetened almond milk which is alkaline. No citrus or vinegar products. See if that helps.
