Mouth feels like there are strings in there along with salty taste .
My mouth initially burned but after 7 months and visits to oral pathology, ENT, Neurology, and trials of several medications blood testing, MRI, BMS was the diagnosis of exclusion. I am on 900 mg of gabapentin/ day, use magic mouthwash and swish with Doxepin. My mouth feels like there are thick strings coming from between my gum and teeth that I try to remove with my tongue but they keep coming since they are neuropathic and not really there. I used to feel like there were porcupine quills but not so much anymore. I have a salty taste and a gummy feeling as well. This is awful.

I have constant bitter taste, but never any burning. And, no string sensation. I’ve seen a couple of neurologists, ENT, etc. How do you know yours is neuropathy? I tried Gabapentin for about 2 weeks for a different problem, but it had no effect on my bitter taste. How did yours start? Mine is supposedly caused by post covid syndrome.
Every doctor I went to said it was burning mouth starting with my dentist who then sent me to an oral pathologist. Mine started after dental work repairing a cavity. After repeated trips to the dentist saying there was something wrong with the filling. He sent me to the Oral Pathologist.
How long after dental work did you get symptoms? I had substantial dental work in March-April 2023, the covid September 2023 and taste/smell disorder hit days later. I’ve always wondered about the dental connection, but my dentist didn’t think there was.
Did you take any particular meds during that time?
Immediately after dental work! My dentist did not appreciate the connection. I was not on any medication at the time.
I see. It seems 2023 was not a kind year for me. The next one was.
I hope your condition improves. I try to stay optimistic though I’m starting to think this is my new normal. I may try a different med to help me. Gabapentin did not help the taste issue at all. So……
Please post any update. Best of luck to you.
I had burning mouth, tongue, and tooth for almost 4 years. Smart emergency PA recommended a scope of esophagus. The pathology report on that scope came back hyperplasia gastritis, reflux and Barrett’s. Results for treatment for reflux was slow but effective. That was 5 months ago and my burning is so much better and I have many periods of time with no burning at all.
That’s great!
I know how awful this is especially the burning. I too was diagnosed with burning mouth which is vague. Took gabapentin and tried lots of other stuff. Replaced 3 new crowns 3 times, had a root canal, and finally pulled a tooth. It took a good month of treatment with ppi for reflux along with the liquid sucralfate for coating esophagus and stomach for me to see a little let up of the burning. After 2 months I could get off pregabalin and pain pills which I have now been off of for 5 months. I also take baclofen. I elevate upper body when sleeping and follow recommended choices and eliminations for eating and drinking. Some times I take a Benadryl or Claritin for nasal allergy. Frozen banana slices feel good in my mouth if I get break out burning and at those times chew pepsid complete. It’s been a nightmare of a journey but the reward is great. My reflux was silent so I never knew I was having reflux. It took a lot of patience but I see the rewards. No I do not eat spicy or fatty foods. I was already skinny and not a drinker or smoker. Getting an esophagus scope might give you some answers to the burning.
