MMR vaccine

My PCF is recommending I get this two shot vaccination ASAP. But, my understanding is is you shouldn’t get a Live vaccine if you are taking Hydrea?

Hi @bobala. This would be a good question to ask the doctor who’s prescribing the Hydrea. There are certain health conditions where having an MMR live vaccine isn’t advised such as having an impaired immune system due to illness, chemo or to medications we’re taking.
However, there are also situations where the benefits outweigh the risks.

Unfortunately, Measles is becoming prevalent again and is highly contagious so it’s understandable that your PCP is recommending the vaccinations.

In the meantime, if this were me, I’d give my oncologist’s office a call. Have you talked with your doctor about this?

Thank you. I don’t have an oncologist. My hematologist prescribed Hydrea.

Hi @bobala, Hematologists are specilists who focus on blood disorders, including anemia, clotting disorders, and blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. It’s not uncommon for hematologists to hold a dual certification in oncology. Either way, your hematologist (or NP in the office) would be the person ask about the MMR vaccine and if it’s reasonable for you to have the vaccination. There are two injections at least 28 days apart.
