Missed dose of pred

Posted by cindyfischer @cindyfischer, 23 hours ago

Hi all,

I am down to 5mg am and 5mg pm and things seem to be going well after the 3rd time trying to decrease. I missed my eve dose last night and I woke up this morning in extreme pain. I took my 5mg this am but still feeling a quite a bit of pain. I have now set alarms on my phone as reminders. I actually feel asleep. This is why I missed. Would you suggest just missing or taking 3 doses in 24hrs to catch up? The split dose works best for me. Thank you!

I think it would be ok if you took an extra 5 mg or even a couple of extra 5 mg pills over a couple of days to get back on track. I've read several times that it is safe to raise your dose for as long as 2 weeks and then dropping back to the original dose without having to taper. So raising the dose for a day or two shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for your response Jeffie!

I agree with Jeff if your still in pain. Good advice just to get your cortisol level back in check. Although at 10mg you have a ways to go. You have not really hit your taper wall yet. good luck

I am aware of the taper wall and I know I’m just approaching. I feel back to pre missed dose this morning. I see the rheumatologist today for a continued taper plan.
Thank you for your response Tucker.

What did you do about the missed dose?

The general recommendation for most medications is to take the dose as soon as you realize that the dose was missed. However, if it is time for your next dose, people should not take a "double dose."

I was curious about what was recommended for Prednisone. I would think it would depend on the amount of pain you experience after the missed dose. When I took Prednisone the pain usually reminded me very quickly when I forgot my Prednisone dose.

Mayo clinic says:
"If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses."

Another source says basically the same:
"When you start to take prednisone, ask your doctor what to do if you forget to take a dose. Write down these instructions so that you can refer to them later. Call your doctor or pharmacist if you miss a dose and do not know what to do. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose."

I woke up at 3am and could hardly move for pain from neck through pelvis. It was worse than the onset in Jan. I took my previous eve dose and pushed back my am dose by 2 hours. I then resumed my 5mg am and 4mg pm routine. Thank you @dadcue.
