Anybody diagnosed with microscopic colitis?
Hi, wondering if anybody here has this for a dx. I have been having a flare for about two months, it is getting a little better with the meds but the doctor wants me to go on a short dose of steriods. I already have a muscle disease so hate to go the steriod route, (plus do not need to gain weight) lol. But if anyone has any hints for me I would appreciate it on how to control this. It is the longest flare I have had.

@nacie and as you know, you had to be there…
I have to go on an antibiotic known to cause diarrhea for an blasted sinus infection. I am TERRIFIED. But i have alerted my GI and know i can watch my diet, go to the mega dose of PeptoB and cross my fingers.
@pb50 can’t you take one that doesn’t cause diarrhea, or is less likely? Quite a few different antibiotics work on sinus infections. I get them constantly, and the antibiotic I take is about the only one that does not give me diarrhea. It works great on sinus infections. (And UTI’s!)
@ndough which one is it? i can ask the doc. Turns out i can’t start it until monday. She chose augmentin.
@pb50 Levofloxacin (Levaquin)

1 ReactionToo funny - the only drug i am allergic to is that class
of antibiotic. (the Quinolones)
But I have found another alternative and messaged the doc with it. - doxycycline. Broad spectrum and the best in class for low diarrhea incidence.
As a friend, i suggest you google
“risks of Fluoroquinolones “
That is the class name for Cipro, Levaquin and some
Others.

1 ReactionI’m already aware of the risks of Fluoroquinolones. However, as far as I am concerned, the benefits outweigh the risks because I am allergic to almost all other antibiotics. Do not want to take anything that causes diarrhea. That happened to me last year when I was given statins for the first time. OMG.

1 ReactionMicroscopic colitis (9 years) is tricky. I also have Celiac Disease (16 years). I was on Budesonide 3 mg for a couple of years and it controlled flares but my hair and skin thinned a bit (72 yo) so have been off it a couple of months. Consider an elimination diet to see if anything new might be twerking your GI tract. Main things with MC are to get enough rest and control stress. I'm sensitive to gluten, legumes, NSAIDs, and now potatoes and even decaff coffee.

2 ReactionsI have had a microscopic colitis (collagenous colitis) for around 10 years now. It’s been a trial - multiple daily liquid stools, some fecal incontinence - not really any pain but some discomfort. After the last episode of fecal incontinence I decided I’d had enough. I started doing some more research, joined this forum, and communicated with my Doc. For about 5-6 weeks I have been on a low residue elimination diet and I have had good results. After 2 weeks on the low residue diet I started adding things back in about every 5 days. I have discovered things that aren’t working - pasta sauce, yogurt, cucumber slices - but some things are working out. Right now I am guessing that raw vegetables and dairy products are not my friends! My Doc says that we’ll do this for 4 months then re-evaluate the need for Budesonide. I remain hopeful. Good luck to you - it’s quite a journey.

7 ReactionsI think you will find that maybe the best diet will be a gluten free, dairy free, extremely low fiber diet. I really miss my fresh, raw veggies and fruit. There are a few that are low in fiber, but not many. My diet is mostly carbs. I refuse to take Budesonide. There is nothing good about taking steroids as far as I am concerned.

1 ReactionAlso, consider strengthening your pelvic and diaphragmatic muscles, beyond just the Kegel exercises. Having strong muscles gives one a bit more time to find a bathroom.
