Metformin and frequent urination, especially at night: Tips?

Posted by mwilson270 @mwilson270, Dec 7, 2023

I just started Metformin 6 days ago, and last night I was up every 1-1/2 hours to urinate! I can't take this every night. I'm thinking of stopping Metformin?

I just checked with my husband. He takes 500 mg Metformin twice a day. He said he just gets up once a night to urinate.

He has been on 500 mg twice daily Metformin for about ten years. He is 79 and blames mild prostrate issue for getting at night.

Thanks! Good for your husband! I'm going ask Endocrinologist about some other medication!

Hi @mwilson270, may I ask for what condition you are taking metformin? I want to make sure your message is in the best forum to get responses.

@mwilson270 I shall assume that you do not have Stage 3 chronic kidney disease as well. Metformin should not be taken at this stage when your eGFR is low. There are diabetic doses of weekly Ozempic that may help. I now take the 2mg for weight loss but no other diabetic medication for the last several years. You may also wish to consider checking with your urologist as well as the endocrinologist.

Thanks, I can't get into the endocrinologist until Jan. 31st!

I started metformin in September -500 mg 2x a day, and I was actually concerned that I wasn’t urinating as much as I was accustomed to. Hopefully an endocrinologist will be able to help.

That is interesting, I was taking 500 MG. Only once a day? Thanks!
