Medullary Thryoid Cancer & Wegovy

Posted by koolkat04 @koolkat04, Feb 6, 2023

I was wondering if anyone here has family history of this rare form of cancer and is on Wegovy? I had concerns about taking it because of this. I did talk to my pcp and she asked the pharmacy about it and gave me the ok. Is this something I should get a second opinion on? And has anyone here had a similar decision to make?

Hi,
I never took Wegovy. I did a quick search to find out what it was and it looks like there is another drug that might be an option. In my opinion, if a drug has a correlation with causing thyroid cancer and there is an alternative, I would go with the alternative medicine. The medicine was approved so the benefits must outweigh the risks but if there is an option, another medicine might work just as well without the added risk.
Good luck!

Some in my family have had medullary thyroid cancer. Mine was 38 yrs ago. I had total thyroidectomy & am doing good. No signs of cancer.

I am not familiar with the Wegovy drug you mentioned.

If taking it for weight loss, please consider joining Weight Watchers. I have been a member for 32 yrs. I attend meetings weekly. You can attend a meeting for free to check it out. Also, virtual meetings available, too. WW is living a healthy lifestyle & doing sensible things. The group support is awesome, too!

Good luck! 🌟

Thank you. I’ll let my pcp im not comfortable using it at this time and if there are any other options. I take contrave which is something that can help with overeating and weight loss but it hasn’t helped me. She did say she talked to the pharmacist and said the cancer wouldn’t be a problem.
